If you want a film where the world really ends, watch Dr. Strangelove.

The idea of the movie doesn't bug me (I like science fiction), but that trailer is horrifying. "The Day After Tomorrow" was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and this looks every bit as cloying.

BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970) had a pretty conclusive ending in this regard, all because ol' Chuck couldn't stand being around all those "damned, dirty apes." The only way they could do sequels was to send two of the principal ape characters back in time to our era (i.e. 1971).

all i know is the cg and fx look beyond incredible. the cast looks good. emmerich's first good cast since ID4, and that was one of the best summer blockbusters i've seen. the blu-ray is going to be the king of reference titles. the plot might be bad but if anybody can match michael bay in terms of blowing shit up, it's emmerich. i'm in.

Because Emmerich is the textbook definition of 'derivative', as Terry Gilliam explained so well:
