Well, this depends on what you believe about what happens after death. If you believe, as I tend to, that death is like turning off a light switch, then there's no gratification. It's just over. The gratification of death presupposes some kind of awareness after you've passed on, and since we can't prove what actually happens when we die, we'll just never know if ol' Dave achieved the Supreme O...or the relief from his life, if it was a suicide.
Personally, I think so, too. I've defended both the suicide and sexual explanations because these are issues upon which I have spent a possibly more than healthy amount of time contemplating over the years in general. But, yeah, I can't wrap my head around an actor going to the trouble of flying off to shoot a movie and deciding during the shoot to take his life. And while there is an obviously high risk factor involved in auto-erotic asphyxiation, it is just as unlikely to me that in Bangkok of all places, someone of his stature would go it alone instead of having a participant. Sorry, but the circumstances are so obviously seedy that I don't buy the face value stories.

If it was suicide, it doesn't seem that shocking when you think about it. The guy had a great career in the 70s and then pissed it away in the 80s and 90s due to alcohol abuse and an inflated ego. Tarantino gave him a second chance, and the guy turns back around and continues taking any straight to DVD/TV movie they offer him. Add to that reports that he was in a perpetual angry mood and possibly intoxicated, and suicide doesn't seem that far off.
