I know that there have been films that have hurt the careers of the Director (ie:Michael Powell, Michael Cimino, Elaine May), but I was wondering if there has been cases where an actor took a role or starred in a film which ended up damaging or destroying their career?

Recently I watched "Soul Man" with my son. He recognized C. Thomas Howell from the original Hitchiker movie and asked whatever happened to him. Though he has been doing work currently (Southland) I think some can say that "Soul Man" hurt his career.
I personally think that movie is funny as hell though....

I read in an interview where Jeanne Tripplehorn said that "Waterworld" messed her up pretty bad and made her want to quit acting. But did it ruin her career for short period of time? I know she's on a bit of a roll now with "Big Love".
