Coriolanus (Fiennes): Ralph Fiennes, William Hurt & Vanessa Redgrave

From Variety:
William Hurt, Vanessa Redgrave and Jessica Chastain have boarded Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut "Coriolanus."

Pic is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's study of the way power corrupts, set in the early years of the Roman Republic.

Fiennes will also play the title role.

Lensing will begin in Serbia in early 2010. John Logan ("The Aviator") is writing the script.
Great cast, looks promising.

Well, I'm looking forward to December. What worked for Richard III could very well work for one of Shakespeare's lesser-known tragedies.

I'm digging it. Hope it works out for Fiennes as a director. Seems like he's got a good look going there.

That's not the production I saw at The Globe in London in 2006.

But it looks great!

Doesn't it?

A few years ago Denzel Washington was in a similar modern armed forces retelling of Julius Casear, which I don't believe ever made it to video, so in that adaptation's absence this will more than suffice.

Now....I've read Hamlet, R&J, Julius Caesar, and among a few others...but...now that I'm reading up on Coriolanus...did anyone ever read it in school? It was never brought up. From what I read..seems like it's a very underrated work.

I read it in college in a Shakespeare class that I took. The professor even said that it was considered "lesser" Shakespeare. But I really enjoyed it, more so than some of his more known works. I wondered when I was reading it why there hadn't ever been a film adaptation of it (at least not one I was aware of). I'm looking forward to seeing the Fiennes' finished result.

Just an aside... when I saw Coriolanus at the Globe, Cominius was played by Joseph Marcell (yup, Jeffery the Butler from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!)

I was at the Empire Big Screen event today and they showed about 10 minutes in total from this and now it's a must see for me.
Had a clip with Brian Cox and everything just seemed so natural when you hear it coming from these actors.

How interesting that Coriolanus, who Brian Cox remarks has "become a dragon", has a dragon tattoo in the trailer's opening shots; Ralph Fiennes played the dragon-tattooed Dolarhyde in Red Dragon, which was first filmed as Manhunter, starring Brian Cox.

OOH FULL CIRCLE THAT'S WHAT WE'VE COME YEAH!

I'm so stoked to see this.

I caught Fiennes and Butler on... Charlie Rose IIRC, might have been something else, anyway they discussed it and showed several scenes.

I can't wait. Fiennes had done this relatively obscure Shakespeare play in a lengthy run in London, and had dreamed of making the film for a long time.

Re: Coriolanus (Fiennes): Ralph Fiennes, William Hurt & Vanessa Redgrave

Saw this today. I knew going in that the movie was based on Shakespeare's play in a modern day setting. I knew that the dialogue came straight from the play itself. I knew that it wasn't an action movie (despite the movie being marketed as such).
I thought it was a well made movie. Wonderfully acted. The use of the play's Shakespearean dialogue was a ballsy move that just didn't work for me. I knew what was happening, didn't have any trouble there. But, like a lot of people, the dialogue went over my head at times or it took a few seconds to register what they meant. Occasionally I felt I was watching a foreign language film without any subtitles.
I think it would have been much more engaging with today's dialogue.
The theater I saw it at is an art theater (so the audience was made up of the more mature movie going type) and there were still about a dozen walk outs.
I don't regret seeing it, but at the same time this is the only time I'm seeing it.

Grade: B

This was better than I hoped.

It would be nice if Fiennes really got the directing bug like Branagh and started doing periodic adaptations. Branagh hasn't done a Shakespearean adaptation since 2000.

I reviewed the Blu-ray for another site and came to much the same conclusions. The movie would have been vastly more enjoyable if they had slightly altered the dialogue for modern speech. It's a particularly odd choice for a play that virtually no one outside of Shakespeare specialists will have seen before and hence most viewers will be unfamiliar with the basics of the plot. The movie only got made in this manner because it was a personal pet project by Fiennes.
