This movie got a mostly positive reception here in Movie Talk (from the apparent few who saw it) though it would seem that those who hated it did so with a passion.

Yes.
Directed by Joe Dante (whose film The Howling utilizes a shot from Zabriskie Point), shot by Dean Cundey (The Thing, Halloween). DJ Drake (Brendan Fraser) is the son of super-spy Damien Drake (Timothy Dalton, seen fighting ninjas in a painting in pic 3) and a part-time stunt double for spoiled superstar Brendan Fraser (Brendan Fraser, although Brendan Fraser's actual stunt double is seen in pic 4). Daffy Duck commandeers the Batmobile - from the set of a Roger Corman-directed Bat-picture(!) - in pic 5. Batman can be seen at the top of pic 2. The movie also features The Fiend Without a Face, The Man From Planet X, and Mary Woronov.

This one has no official DVD release (not that that always helps), so we'll have to make do with these somewhat soft, blurry shots. Sorry, best I could do.

I don't know the original aspect ratio of the film (doesn't say at IMDb), but I did cut a shade off both the top and the bottom of the picture. There's a constant imprint of something edging into the top (probably a running clock), and a line running through the bottom.

Nay, not any of The Squeezes.

Nope, that piece of shit wouldn't get anywhere near my collection.
This is a four-character drama that is all about sexual tension from beginning to end. I think the late director is one of the more underappreciated of American filmmakers.

The three main leads, all of whom became variously successful movie and TV stars. This was early in the careers of two and the debut of the other.

The fourth lead. Unlike the others, she didn't have much future success in the industry, despite garnering a major commendation for her role in this film.

This scene earned the film an X rating before it was trimmed.

Movie is based on a novel.

That's right. You must've done some detective work.
I think I'll be even vaguer with the clues next time.
These would've been the giveaway shots:

Whoa. Thanks for posting this movie. I finally have a name to that movie that I ran into on cable back in the 90's.

Gladly. It's an interesting movie. Hard to find these days.

Googling "beach movie 'four friends' 'based on a novel'" brought up the Last Summer IMDb page. The cast seemed to match the other clues, so I took a stab at it. First pic.
