Banlieue 13 - Ultimatum (2009)

c: David Belle, Cyril Raffaelli
Release: Feb 18th, 2009 (France), TBD (USA)
imdb
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9yi4jTxxsKo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9yi4jTxxsKo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
Looks like fun - enjoyed the first a great deal, hopefully Alessandrin can keep up what Morel started (Morel is quickly becoming a go-to director for the straight forward action flick.)
Also, looks like Belle put on some weight... but only in the face? how does that work.

From what I've read, they upped the martial arts
but downplayed the parkour
this time around. And Dany Verissimo is nowhere to be found.
Nevertheless, I want to see this.

Loved the first one. This one was a disappointment.
Stupid, stupid plot and not enough fighting or parkour

How could they fuck up this film? Well, get a bad writer and bad director.
I just watched the UK PAL DVD of this, and it's not that great. Any scenes with David Belle and Cyril Rafaelli are great, but they don't show up together until 50 minutes past. There's more martial arts than parkour in this as well. What made the first film great was the pacing, and the balance of the parkour and the martial arts. I don't know why they didn't have much parkour in here. That's the whole point of these films. Everyone has seen martial arts films, but parkour is still pretty new and exciting. There should have been more of that.
I remember being disappointed that Luc Besson was not directing the first District 13, but over time, I know realize that director Pierre Morel is a good filmmaker. He knows about pacing, action, intensity, and more. The director of the sequel is just nothing.
I hope David Belle and Cyril Rafaelli are working on something else together now. They have great chemistry together. I certainly hope that a filmmaker writes a masterpiece for David Belle to show off even more parkour.

It's also available on Demand.
And yeah, Pierre Morel understands how to pace a movie.

I got it today on BD from Amazon.co.uk. Same day it premieres on HDNet. Watching it now and have to say that so far, it's just o.k. at best. It's clear it has a different director than the first film. Because the sequel suffers from the pacing of the original. It's just no where near as frenetic. In fact, it borders on boring here and there. Tough shoes to fill. The first was so good (IMO).
