Weekend box office (05/01 - 05/03) Wolvie whoops?
Looks like first day's take is $34.75 according to Dark Horizons: http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/140...m-opening-day/
So, that puts it on pace for between $80 - $90 million. Not bad, but it didn't even best Iron Man. Considering Wolvie was probably more well known, that's pretty shocking to me.

With a $35 million opening day, $95 million for the weekend is still possible, but $90 million is more likely.
The only downside is that the movie will have no legs. Word-of-mouth is 2/3s neutral or negative, and next week is Star Trek, so I kind of see Wolverine barely crossing $200 million domestically.

X3 opened to $45 million on Friday, then took a 30% drop on Saturday. I am guessing this will also see a fairly big Saturday drop, putting it at maybe $80 million, or less, for the weekend.

No film, aside from Twilight, has had a $35m opening day and not hit $200m. I'm going to say Wolverine joins it, though, because the horrendous word of mouth is going to sink it next week. Plus, those "hidden endings" that Hood was obviously hoping would entice people to see the film have already popped up on YouTube... and they suck.

i was reading on imdb that they were expecting upwords of 115 mil this weekend. I wonder if the studio will blame the bootleg workprint being leaked a month early, as to why it didn't do as well.

i think the leaked workprint had something to do with the box office.
I planned on watching it in the theater, but after watching the leaked workprint, if it was a good movie, I'd definitely pay to watch it in the big screen. but it sucked.

IMO, it's amazing this movie made as much as it did on Friday, I know a lot of places were expecting a $75m opening weekend, I was sort of amazed by that and expected $60m tops myself. The fact it may make more than that is a bit of a headscratcher.

Also, it looks like Obsessed will only be down about 56% this weekend, not 65 - 70% like I was originally guessing

Twentieth Century Fox, which is releasing the film, is making no grandiose predictions for it, with executives telling the Hollywood Reporter that they would deem a $70-million bow to be "acceptable." And Fox sales manager Chris Aronson told TheWrap.com: "The expectation bar has to be set at a realistic place. It's a spin-off of a movie that's been sequelized twice."

I don't. I think it's the mix of terrible reviews, the fact that it looked terrible in the trailers, and it's following X3: The Last Stand which was just fucking terrible.

And while critic reviews have been poor for this, given the subject matter there wasn't any question that the public would flock to this. Average joe reviews for these movies are always better for something like this, like the current 7.0 rating on IMDB for X3 and Wolverine, or the 6.2 user rating for Wolverine on Rotten Tomatoes.

Really? I can't see how anyone would predict it to be that low, especially when you see something like Fast & Furious opening to 70+ million. I think people are greatly exaggerating the amount of backlash from X3, where comic fans and internet chatter was FAR harsher then the general audience.

So despite being a popular character, I just didn't think it would have that much of a pull. It doesn't help that spin-offs generally have a poor track record and the X-men movies already felt like Wolverine movies. I just don't see how people expected this to perform on the same level of some of these other comic flicks, especially one as poorly advertised as this one.
And fwiw, even Fast & Furious - in trailer/ad form - looked like it would at least be an entertaining night at the movies. Plus the "tough guy street racing" genre isn't nearly as overcrowded.
In otherwords, I am very, very surprised it is doing this well. And I don't see how it could be considered a disappointment in terms of box office opening, even if it has a sizeable saturday/sunday drop.

I don't think that is a dissapointing opening by any means, but given that the movie was dreadful, & will likely not have much postive word of mouth, & with ST opening next weekend, this will have a pretty massive drop off & fizzle out rather quickly. It's just a completely forgettable movie.

I know that I was on the fence on seeing Wolverine and ultimately chose to wait for Blu-ray. However, I probably will go and see Star Trek next week, which says something since I'm not really a Trekkie.

the movie is doing well as expected
advance leak and crys of crappy movie (which I disagree with) are having little effect
if anything I'm surprised it is doing as well with 24/7 coverage of Swine Flu all over the news
that said it will do its business this week and will fall off hard with the upcoming release of ST and Terminator

I think Young kids will go with their dates and that will make up most of the first weekend audience. From there it will dip drastically as word of mouth gets out.

If it does 80-90 this weekend Fox will be very happy. Everyone there is worried about the workprint leak killing all the business.

No it isn't, the online fan community makes up a minuscule percentage of the people going to it this wnd... I'm surprised the studios pay as much attention as they do frankly. Wolverine will make it's 175m, 300m worldwide despite most die-hards throwing a temper tantrum.

^ yep, the demographic of women who would want to see a shirtless Jackman is far greater than the demo of fanboyz up in arms over the treatment of an obscure 90's side character (Deadpool) .... "Australia" aside

Re: Weekend box office (05/01 - 05/03) Wolvie whoops?
I'm gonna say 35M Fri 25M Sat 20M Sun for 80M this weekend for Wolvie with an overall multiplier of 2... ~160M total not getting to 200M if only for the opening of Star Trek next weekend.
Star Trek is going to cause this thing to fall like a ROCK. I'd expect a 65-70% drop next week because of the poor word of mouth coming from this production combined with the tremendous word of mouth and reviews coming out of the Star Trek camp.

For Wolverine, I'll say:
Friday: $35 million
Saturday: $23 - 25 million
Sunday: $14 - 16 million
For a more realistic prediction gross this weekend: $74 - 80 million (I originally thought it would do more than $80 million in the Summer prediction thread, but realistic, it might drop 30% today and same tomorrow).
Even if it pulls in $80 million this weekend, I can't see it doing more than $32 million next weekend; especially with Star Trek.
