Box office predictions: Star Trek

opening weekend: 60 million

total take: 200 million

Deftones 05-01-09 07:47 PM

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

why would you go in 25 million increments, but then when you get to 100 go up 50?

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

$52-55 Million OPening weekend.
Final Domestic gross= 107-117 Million.
I will be pretty shocked if it does more.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I'm going to say it does $52m opening, but I expect good word-of-mouth will carry the final domestic to around $150m.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

Before I saw it, I would have said $150 million total domestic. Now, having seen it, I don't think $250 million is unrealistic. But I'll go with $225 million domestic and a cool $65 million opening weekend.

Even if only the die-hards come out to this one, it's going to make $100 million (just via repeat business). Since this is easily the most mainstream-accessible TREK since STAR TREK IV, I can't see it's domestic take NOT reaching $200 million (or darn close to that).

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

As I mentioned in the summer box office thread, I see this doing anywhere from $50-60 million opening weekend.

I have passes tomorrow for a morning screening. I can't wait after all the early reviews.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I think it's going to do $75 million opening. If it's as action packed and as good as the reviews, people will go see it twice. Also I've heard that you don't have to know Trek or be a big fan to enjoy this. Just look at the TV ads playing up the action and sex, they want people that aren't into Trek to see this.

So you only think Star Trek will be in theaters for 3 weeks?

I'm guessing at least $60 million and over $175 million total. I don't see any sci-fi/action competition in May.

Yes. 3 weeks.
Its got angels and Demons coming out a week later and 13 days after Star Trek Opens Terminator 4 opens up which I would say is certainly some serious sci-fi/action competition and I believe it'll take all the business previously done by Star Trek and more.. Then a day later Night at the Museam 2 opens up.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I totally forgot Terminator. However, I think this will have some good legs.

I don't think Angels & Demons is going to steal much thunder from Trek. Da Vinci Code did very well, but most everyone can agree it was a piece of shit. I think the older/adult crowd it'll draw in will have either already seen Trek or they weren't interested in the first place. The only flick that'll take away viewers will be T4 the week after.

Prepare to be shocked. I will be shocked if it is not huge. Actually HUGE. I talked to a gu at my local theater and he said that internally based upon some pre-release and midnight sales figures and reviews that they think it could be $300 million movie.

In terms of this thread I think it does more than a $100 million opening weekend alone.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I think it will open to around 60-65 million. Strong word of mouth and reviews might raise that to 70, but I can't see it doing $100 million in it's opening weekend.

Midnight sales are going to be huge for something like Star Trek, since this type of thing will attract all the sci-fi fans, so I think it's tough to predict based on those numbers.

Looking at the numbers, the only non-sequel to open with over $100 mil is Spider-Man. I think it will be tough for this to reach it.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

Trek IV is the only movie in the franchise to gross over $100M in non-adjusted dollars. All signs point to Trek XI to do gangbusters though but the stigma associated with Trek is an important factor to consider. I say a $50-60M opening weekend (more than Nemesis grossed during its entire run) with total domestic gross about $175M.

I'm surprised at the folks thinking it'll earn less than 25M for the weekend. It'll do that on Friday alone.

High end of 76-100 million for me.

FWIW, my cousin, a total jock, with no interest whatsoever in any of the previous Star Trek's, is actually excited to see this in the theatre next week.

Apparently something is working...

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I think it'll probably do close to 78mil... I thought non-fans would stay away, but everyone I know, young, old, fan, non-fan are fucking pumped for this movie and are going on the weekend... I think folks are slightly underestimating it's appeal to play it safe.

It is going to destroy. I voted in the 76-100 range and I wouldn't be surprised if it played strong for weeks to come.

Are people serious with the 151+ million opening? I believe only 4-5 movies have ever opened greater than 100+ million, and most of those were on holiday weekends.

70-75 OW

165-200 Domestic.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. Unless they thought it was total gross. They should make these polls public :)

$91 Million opening take.

Patman 05-03-09 02:15 PM

I'm going to go with $82 million for opening weekend take. I think the Burger King marketing (TV ads with BK looking like a Burger Klingon) tie-in is going to make a difference. :D

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I'm thinkin...

45M Thur-Fri
35M Saturday
25M Sunday

= 105M OW.

I don't see it opening less than 90M. The film has buzz and positive reviews out the roof... both the young and older demo are going. I want to go but also my mother wants to go (because she remembers watching the Original Series).

Wolverine is going to sink at least 60% next week... probably closer to 70%. 2/3 of the people who see it think it's just alright or even unremarkable.

wolverine is not going to have that great legs, but drop 70%? even turds drop less than that. Plus Wolverine might get spill over buisness from star trek.

I could see a 60% drop for Wolverine happening.

No. A 60% drop for Wolverine will happen, if not more. Poor word of mouth and the excitement for Star Trek has it as a dead man walking next weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a 70-80% drop.

After seeing it last night, I still stick by my $50-60 million opening weekend. It may take more (especially due to it being the only PG-13 film of the weekend), but I see it making more of it's money due to the legs the film will have due to positive word of mouth.

I voted for the highest one, but I misread it as total gross. I assumed it was total when I saw the $150 million+. No way trek or any other movie will that anytime soon.

No way Wolverine takes an 80% drop. That's worse than the drop Hulk had, if I'm not mistaken, and that film was pretty much universally loathed. This movie is mostly getting "meh" reactions.

Chew 05-04-09 06:34 AM

Are there any "official" projections of opening weekend yet?

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

i think because of the damned great reviews so far and a re-invention that seems poised to not cater to just fanboys, but all moviegoers a like i say...

$85-100 mil. maybe more open weekend. i think it will surprise. it will do more than $250, probably $300+ by end.

Ginwen 05-04-09 12:04 PM

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

I guessed 51-75 million. Based on my past history in these things, that means it will most likely be right up around 100 million.

Re: Box office predictions: Star Trek

There should have been two different polls here. One for Trekkies and one for everyone else. I can't imagine how anyone can think this is going to open at over $100 million. Many die-hard Trekkies aren't happy about the new crew and will not go on opening week. In my mind the franchise has some stink on it - it reeks of old man. Seriously how many really young fans, 13-29 years old, are there? That's a hypothetical question BTW.

Don't tell me Abrams fans are going to come out in droves. MI3 opened at under $50 million. Cloverfield (which he produced) opened at $40 million.

For the record, I love Star Trek and will be there opening weekend. My guess? $60 million making it the biggest Trek opening ever, but not much more.

I don't know, i'm under the impression that tons of non-fans are interested in this given the exciting look of the trailers and some of the casting. I hate the old Star Trek but this looks pretty awesome to me.

Do we know that for sure? I mean even the votes here is averaging a 3 out of 5 stars. and for a summer action popcorn flick, that is not half bad. Are we just assuming that there will be poor word of mouth?
