Have any of these 80s remakes REALLY taken off? I don't mean "yeah overall they were profitable", I mean, transcended their original inspiration and become a pop culture phenomenon of its own?

Fame, Footloose, Total Recall, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street... its like a roll-call of shameful mediocrity or cultural indifference.

Honestly I don't know. Even after BD/DVD sales. Was it worth it in the end? That's what I wonder in the financial figure sense.

Not restricting it to solely 80's remakes, the remakes I can think of that have actually become popular in their own right would be...

Ocean's 11

Ocean's 11
Ocean's 11 was less a remake and more a Soderbergh movie. And Soderbergh knows what he's doing. I'd trust him and Nolan with any remake.
