Where is Machete?

I want it and I want it NOW! Why is Rodriguez taking so long to make this? |
Re: Where is Machete?
It might have something to do with the fact that Grindhouse was not a success in America. Then again, the way the Weinsteins have run their company, I'd almost expect them to greenlight four more Grindhouse projects based on how the first one did.

Re: Where is Machete?
Why do you guys suspect Grindhouse bombed so badly? Has Tarantino lost touch with his fans?

As mentioned, it has to do with the fact that Machete was a fake trailer attached to Grindhouse.

Re: Where is Machete?
No, I think releasing a 3+ hour movie on Easter Weekend against the Passion of the Christ probably had something to do with it. Also, the marketing sucked. I knew about the movie and from the trailers I couldn't tell it was two separate films. If I hadn't known already, I would have been incredibly confused about what they were showing me.

Deathproof was a bit hard for a lot of people to enjoy. After watching it on opening night, I expected it to be huge. Everyone had fun and I thought it'd be a very popular party-kinda movie. Oh, and it opened against "Blade of Glory", "Meet the Robinsons" and "Are We Done Yet?". We also had Wild Hogs, Shooter and the TMNT animated flick in the top ten. Not exactly a lot of competition. If anything, I would blame 300, for eating up the previous weeks' 'Grindhouse' goers. You know, like people got their fill of bloody, fun, macho escapism for a month or two. 300 was up to $193mil as of that weekend. |

It also includes line such as "Rodriguez and Tarantino are back-to-back with a double feature" and "First is Rodriguez's Planet Terror, plus Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof," as well as "Two Motion Features for the Price of One." |

Re: Where is Machete?
Last I heard Trejo said it was still on, it was just a matter of scheduling and other stuff.

But, I think the main reason was touched upon already, which is that this type of cinematic experience/experiment really only appealed to people like QT and RR themselves, real cinema fans. J6P would not get it and probably walk out bitching about the missing reels and such. The fact that I saw this at a mall theater was weird and it was also pretty empty. Grindhouse should have been relegated to art theaters because film fans that go to those were the only ones who would've gotten it. Of course it is ironic, that a film made 30 years after true Grindhouse fare, trying to be Grindhouse, is now an art film. |

Of course it is ironic, that a film made 30 years after true Grindhouse fare, trying to be Grindhouse, is now an art film. The re-release of Passion of the Christ was in 2005, it failed to do much business in theaters on its second go around. Grindhouse was advertised fine in theaters (the trailer) -- the actual TV ads didn't do such a hot job and actually were confusing, especially if you didn't know what a Grindhouse picture was. They kind of tried to jam the contents of both movies into one short promo that aired in 15- and 30-second commercial spots. By the end of the ad, you had some okay visuals but didn't really have a feel for what the movies were about, plus the whole 70s throwback thing is a tough sale to begin with. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie and wound up seeing it twice in theaters. Found Death Proof to overall be the more satisfying entry (felt like applauding the end, it hit all the right notes) though Planet Terror was fun and far more accessible. I'd see Machete in a heartbeat, but it does seem unlikely to ever come out. Would make a great double feature with Black Dynamite. |

The first thing it says on that trailer is...Grindhouse: a theater playing back-to-back films. It also includes line such as "Rodriguez and Tarantino are back-to-back with a double feature" and "First is Rodriguez's Planet Terror, plus Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof," as well as "Two Motion Features for the Price of One." Some moviegoers who bought tickets to see the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino "double bill" Grindhouse were apparently unaware that the feature comprised two separate movies -- and walked out after the first one, Rodriguez's Planet Terror, ended, published reports said today (Tuesday). "I don't think people understood what we were doing," Weinstein told today's New York Post. "The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one." And from another IMDB article that mentions Grindhouse being split in two: "I don't think people understood what we were doing. The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one. I don't understand the math, but I want to accommodate the audience." |

Re: Where is Machete?
I know for a fact that Rodriguez is trying hard to get this off the ground. I hope it happens because if the final product is anything like the trailer it will be epic.

Re: Where is Machete?
It probably wont happen. The only people still pimping it are the actors and filmmakers who are not the money men.
The entire Grindhouse concept was supposed to launch a series of Weinstein Co. produced movies, a direct to dvd line and so forth. But, the film seriously underperformed, the Weinsteins aren't in the best financial shape, and the film makers, for the most part, have moved on to other, more sensible, priority projects. |
Re: Where is Machete?
People were walking out of the theater during Death Proof once the second group of chicks started blabbing on and on. I guess they had enough of the first group. By the end my brother and I were the only ones left. Not that it was full to begin with. I loved Planet Terror but Death Proof is still the worst Non-Matrix movie I have ever seen. I would love to see a Machete film however but as most have already posted it isn't likely due to the poor box office in the US. Did the dvds sell well because you can find them for like $7 each at Wal-Mart?

Re: Where is Machete?
As much as I like the idea of a Machete movie, I'm worried that the idea of a Machete movie is a lot better than an actual Machete movie.
|
Re: Where is Machete?
I think the biggest problem was the reported budget of $53 million. If they had stuck to the low budget roots of these films they would've been more profitable. Not that they could have been made for $200,000 or whatever those films used to cost, but there are ways they could've trimmed costs.

Eli Roth has confirmed he is indeed making "Thanksgiving"

Re: Where is Machete?
I think the concept itself wasn't going to be a big hit. Seemed like more of a cult type of film from the get go, so the poor box office didn't surprise me. And i'd agree that the TV spots made it hard for a regular movie goer to understand what they were trying to do and what Grindhouse actually was.
That, and I thought Death Proof was boring as hell. |

See, its that kind of hyperbole that gives people too much hope. He hasn't "confirmed" anything. He says, "...The plan is this: I want to do a huge budget movie, but tack on three weeks to the end of it and shoot ‘Thanksgiving’,” he revealed. “I want to do an $80 million dollar movie, and then schedule three weeks at the end to quickly shoot a $5 million dollar movie.” A plan is not a confirmation. He also planned on adapting Kings Cell and remake The Bad Seed but those stalled, so could this.

Re: Where is Machete?
The movie made about as much as a real grindhouse flick would have. Seems about right. :D

I would definitely see Machete, as well as "Don't!". Gosh this thread makes me want that Japanese Grindhouse set for the theatrical cuts. In fact I'd rather they release the double feature disc rather than Machete. |

Re: Where is Machete?
Fucking YAY! on that news...also...
Being the only mexican kid in my circle of friends and whatnot...I was laughing like crazy at the concept of Machete. Grindhouse was the only time I had ever EVER been that excited by the things on screen. I was heavily exicited and whatnot. Also...once the tagline "They just fucked with the wrong Mexican!" came up I was screaming in joy cuz...well it's fucking badass. I'm sure this alone will get the Mexican crowd here in Texas to go see it (well...maybe a small number in reality but you never know!). About time we have a hero to cheer for :) |

"In addition to the news that Robert Rodriguez is going to direct 20th Century Fox's reboot of the Predator franchise, it was also announced that the writer-director-producer is eyeing a June start date in Austin for Machete, a feature about the blade- wielding antihero who appeared in a mock trailer that was part of Grindhouse back on '07. The film is financed and produced by Overnight Productions, with Danny Trejo starring as the title character. Machete is a Mexican ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, who is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator. Rodriguez wrote the script and will direct the film with Ethan Maniquis, his longtime editor." |
Re: Where is Machete?
well shit, i'll believe it when i see it. not too excited about the predator reboot but if anyone is going to do it, i'm glad its him.
|
Re: Where is Machete?
Yay!
IESB is reporting that director Robert Rodriguez is rebooting the franchise (Predator). "I'm going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here, a sci-fi action film called 'Nervewrackers,' a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called 'Sin City 2' and 'The Jetsons,'" he said in a speech speaking to Texan politicians. |
Re: Where is Machete?
Interesting. Always wary when a director says "I'm doing this, and this, and this, and this, and this..." because a full director plate almost never pans out. Curious to see who's producing Machete and what the budget will be. If he makes it, hope he aims cheap and more true to old b-films.
