Re: Watchmen (Snyder, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

This guy really didn't like the movie:

Man shoots himself during "Watchmen" movie

Eugene (KMTR) – A man shot himself to death in a Eugene movie theater just after midnight Monday morning.

Police say about 10 patrons were in an auditorium at Regal Cinemas watching the movie “Watchmen.” About midway through the film some of the moviegoers told the manager they heard a “popping” noise like a gunshot. A 24-year-old man was found in the rear of the auditorium with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the man shot himself and was dead when they arrived.

The patron closest to the man was sitting two rows away.

So, I guess that guy didn't have a chance to vote in this poll here?

There are two scenarios why he either liked the film or didn't like the film:

1. For the happy suicide: "Now I can die happy after seeing this movie finally made."

OR

2. For the depressed suicide: "Where's the squid???????"

A lot of shootings this week it seems, how nice it would be for Obama to outlaw buying guns in the USA...

I'm going with the squid.

Maybe it was the sex scene. No way Dan should have gotten that kind of action ...

I just watched The Director's Cut.

It's a better movie in my book. Some notable scenes and an overall better flow to me.

WOW!! That was unreal. I felt much more emotion than anything I can remember from the movie.

The restored clip of Nite Owl II confronting a Knot Top in the bar later in the film is a very viscerally satisfying clip after this one.

Re: Watchmen (Snyder, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

The more I see this clip the more I appreciate some of the changes made to the film. Like the attempted Rape scene in the film. Spectre put up a fight in the film, not in the book. In the book Hollis was taken out with very minor struggle, and in this one the same outcome happens but the way it happens is better. Mason isn't delusional or man longing for the past and not letting go. He's reliving the glory days that was the peak of his life. He gets his chance, sadly, in this scene. That theme playing is so well placed for sure. Really really hones true with the connection to what Raging Bull was.

Can't wait to see the Director's cut in theaters here in Denton. The ONLY theater in Texas showing it...yay!

Re: Watchmen (Snyder, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

Lousy acting from the topknots aside, that was a great scene and far better than anything in the theatrical cut. I also feel this is a better sendoff for Hollis than the one in the comic book which was rather matter-of-fact. I also like how the fight is intense but low-key, unlike the over-the-top fights in the rest of the movie.

I'm definitely looking forward to the director's cut now.

After watching this for the first time since the theater on blu-ray, my opinion stands this is a superior film to The Dark Knight. It may even be the best comic book movie ever made, up there with Batman Begins and Iron Man.

I was tending towards that after my one theatrical screening, looking forward to seeing it again at home next week.

No. Not even close. Watchmen is good, but not that good.

No, I'd put Watchmen and Dark Knight (as movies) on about the same level. The main thing DK had going for it was Ledger - you take him out, and you're left with very little.

The main thing DK had going for it was Christopher Nolan, Ledger was great but it was only a supporting role.

I disagree. Nolan's versions are better, but the villians still make the Batman movies work. Anytime Ledger got on the screen, things were interesting. And all of my favorite moments from that movie (which I love) are scenes he is in.

My director's cut shows up today. I saw Watchmen twice in the theater, and I'm looking forward to checking out the new stuff in this version. One of the best films I've seen in a long time.

Re: Watchmen (Snyder, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

The cinematogprahy in Watchmen was superior to Dark Knight for me, as I tend to enjoy more flashy camera-work. It almost felt like Tarantino at times.

And yes, take away Ledger and Dark Knight would be nowhere near as good. Watchmen has a lot more substance and deep meaning going on. Dark Knight has some of that, but not used as effectively I don't think.

On top of all that, Watchmen is just one hell of an entertaining, fun movie.

It seems silly to me to talk about removing characters or actors from their role. Take away Jackie Earle Haley playing Rorshach and it would lose a lot too.

re: 'Dark Knight' to 'Watchmen', I've thought the fight scenes and how they were specifically shot were terrible when compared to 'Watchmen'
