The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

Here it is, the ultimate battle between arguably the two most beloved movies of all-time. No other movies on this poll to interfere with the results, just one on one. Which one do you prefer?

Re: The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

Part 1 is amazing, but Part II is even better. De Niro's addition as a young Vito alone warrants it a level greatness AND it's all in Italian. It's an awesome parallel of Michael trying to save the family from shattering and young Vito's fight to establish it. Just amazing cinema.

Part 2.

Now, how about a hard poll? (that's what she said)

Part II

Pretty sure we've had this poll already.

II b/c DeNiro

Out of all his amazing performance, the one in II is probably at least top 5, maybe top 3 and could even be the best thing he's ever done.

It's like I, is a delicious cake. A sweet and tasty treat that I would be happy to enjoy any day.

II is like that same cake, only frosted... by a stripper... while I watch.

Re: The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

The first one, easily.

Part II has the Havana stuff which always bores the piss outta me. Plus I'm still not sure I understand what the plan was with the Rosata Bros. attempting to kill Pentangeli. Did they actually intend to kill him or merely give him the impression that they tried to kill him on the orders of Michael so he'd run to the feds? Seems a little far-fetched if the latter was their intention.

I will concede though that the final 45 minutes of Part II are maybe the finest 45 minutes ever committed to celluloid. Incredible stuff.

Re: The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

I love both.

The Havana scenes in II are my least favorite of both movies, but II also the has the incredible stuff with DeNiro as a young Vito.

I'll go with the first one as a whole, by a very slim margin. Of course, if asked another time I could just as easily justify going with II.

Part II is a better movie and more critically acclaimed.

Part I is more fun to watch.

I would have to agree to this. 1 is so pure in it's optimism for Michael and his struggle to continue. II is already established and it's going downhill for Michael while at the parallel Vito is beginning to create his family. Apples and Oranges is the correct statement to use for these two.

The Godfather for sure.

Godfather II is indeed, less fun to watch.

Yet another vote for Part II, but it's splitting hairs.

What I'd like to know is who doesn't like either one? Based off the poll someone out there doesn't like them.

I prefer the first. For some reason I never cared for the split story.

Re: The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

OFF topic:...you're scaring me. I'm with a mixed bag of criticism for Lee. I loved Crouching Tiger, was bored and displeased with Hulk, was suprised and pleased with Brokeback, still haven't seen Lust, Caution...I'll wait till it's cheaper or something to watch it.

on topic: I still think part II is the better film, but Part I is the most entertaining one for sure.

I haven't seen either, but I voted for #2 because it has Pacino in it. Scarface is an incredible film.

Re: The Ultimate Battle: The Godfather vs The Godfather: Part II

I consider I to be the greatest film ever made which puts II a few hairs under it. The whole Havana thing bores and confuses me. Still there's so much good that I might like it better if it wasn't for the final scene in I. It still gives me chills just thinking about it.

this makes no sense. They both have Pacino...so what do you mean?
