Going with How Green Was My Valley. Because it beat Citizen Kane.

It also beat The Maltese Falcon. But even though it's not nearly as good as those two classics, when looked at just on its own merits, How Green Was My Valley is a very good film.

So I voted for Gentleman's Agreement which is a preachy and heavy-handed bore.

The Lost Weekend easily of the ones I have seen. Gentlemans agreement isnt that great either but it was better than Lost Weekend which despite having some good scenes the film is terribly dated.

I just watched all ten of those (for our challenge).

Not sure how to vote just yet, but the best one was How Green Was My Valley.

Gentleman's Agreement, though I haven't seen Going My Way. A musical with Barry Fitzgerald? Ugh.

How Green Was My Valley is one of John Ford's best pictures...and as such, one of the best pictures ever made.

Re: Worst best picture winner of the 1940's

A great decade for film, and for Oscar choices (mostly). Some real masterpieces in this group. None of them are awful films, like several Best Picture winners in later decades, but Gentleman's Agreement and Going My Way are the weakest.

Trivia note: Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for his role in Going My Way (in the final vote, they gave him Supporting and went with Bing Crosby for Best Actor). This prompted an Academy rule change to prevent it from happening again.

Re: Worst best picture winner of the 1940's

Those are 10 still relevant films. I'm piling on Gentleman's Ageement with my vote, but The Lost Weekend is one of Wilder's weekest.

Re: Worst best picture winner of the 1940's

I've seen all of them. Seven of them are masterpieces. Two of them, GOING MY WAY and ALL THE KING'S MEN, are not masterpieces, but are still really interesting movies. MRS. MINIVER is absolutely terrible and by far the worst Best Picture winner of the 1940s.
