Best remake ever

Which movie would you say is the best remake ever made?

tylergfoster 02-20-09 09:18 PM

Re: Best remake ever

Of the ones you listed, I picked John Carpenter's The Thing.

an abe55 poll with THE THING as a choice???? how odd. however, in this case it's the correct answer.

I like a lot of those, but I'd say the best of the bunch is The Thing.

What's so funny? It's a great remake.

not the best, but I thought the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was surprisingly good.

Sorry, I think The Fly is a way better remake than The Thing (which is also pretty darned good though).

Re: Best remake ever

The question is: What will be the next big remake for future generations? For example, will Star Wars be re-made in 40 years? Matrix? Clockwork Orange? Amelie? Unforgiven? The Lord of the Rings? What movies may seem sacrilegious to remake now but possibly would be remade in 40-plus years?

dino88 02-20-09 10:33 PM

Re: Best remake ever

Of these choices I picked The Fly. I've seen all of the originals except The Thing, so that may have gotten another vote had I seen the original.

At the rate we're going, most of those will be remade around 2012.

My vote is for The Thing. The Fly comes in second.

The Thing

Why it doesn't have 100% of the votes is beyond me. :)

I actually went for Dawn of the Dead. I love The Thing, but have never seen the original (It Came From Outerspace?).

As for a contemporary movie that would be sacrelige to remake ... I'll go just a little bit older than modern movies ... I would imagine it will be The Godfather that is going to be remade as a vehicle for Ashton Kutcher's "comeback" as a serious actor.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Great thread. And tough list to choose a best. I will admit though, I didn't even know "Ocean's" was a remake. Anyway, I'd pick these. In order.

"The Thing"
"Cape Fear"
"The Fly"
"Dawn of the Dead"

The original of The Thing is The Thing From Another World (1951). A similarly titled film to It Came from Outer Space, It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), was remade as Alien.

Re: Best remake ever

It's almost not fair to include The Thing here, because it always wins. But it needs to be included in every poll, because it is that awesome.

Close second: The Fly.

i know it has its' detractors, but i think De Palma's "Scarface" is epic and i've seen it the most over time, though it really has very little to do with the 32 original.

Not a remake. That's like saying the TV movie version of "The Shining" is a remake of the Kubrick film.

I'm not going to view this as "Best Americanized foreign film," so I won't choose The Departed. In that case, The Thing gets my vote. Carpenter's best film (except for They Live :D), and a touchstone of the horror genre.

The Fly by a longshot. The rest of those movies listed suck.
