1. my first, rather obvious choice is "Crash" in 2006 winning Best Pic. the much maligned, talked about choice didn't deserve to beat out the stellar "Brokeback Mountain" which was so different and of course not the safe choice, but to me had Best Pic written all over it.

I thought Brokeback was great but I thought Capote was the best picture that year. I know I'm in the minority there but I'm surprised that Capote rarely gets mentioned amongst the best films of that year. Choosing Capote certainly wouldn't have been a bigger blunder than choosing Crash.

1998 was a terrible year
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan
Roberto Benigni over Ian McKellen (I'll never understand this one)
Gwyneth Paltrow over Cate Blanchett

I'm still miffed that "Beauty and the Beast" got "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)"'s trophy for song in '91. Other than watching Letterman host, I haven't watched the Academy Awards since.

But nothing against Brokeback Mountain. It was great. I just think the movie would be an afterthought now if it had won Best Picture. As it stands, I think it's overrated because people think it was snubbed. I also think that at the time the hype of the movie was too big. There were people proclaiming that it would be remembered 20 years from now and 4 years later the only time it seems to come up is when someone mentions that it was snubbed at the Oscars.
Crash and Good Luck and Good Night had no business being nominated at all, IMO.

yeah, i just saw GNaGL the other day and while it was good and well played i don't think it was outstanding in anyway shape or form and very small scale, almost tv movie like.

I haven't agreed with a Best Picture winner since Braveheart in '95.
Whether he deserves it or not, I can't say, but I feel truly sorry for anyone that wins that is not Heath Ledger. The momentum and public support for him is nothing short of amazing. The pressure on the actual winner must be insane and their speech is going to have to be humble to say the least.

Al PAcino should have won best actor for Godfather II instead of Art Carney for Harry and Tonto. And Denzel should have won for Malcolm X instead of Pacino in Scent of a Woman.
Also about 95% of the song winners are pieces of shit. Aimee Mann should have won the Oscar over that piece of shit Phil collins Tarzan garbage.
And some of the worst best picture winners ever (and didnt even deserve to be nominated ) are The Lost Weekend, Chicago, Driving Miss DAisy (should have gone to Do the RIght thing that year), Crash, Ordinary People, Chariots of Fire and West Side Story.

Oh it's a great movie, but just a 'by-the-numbers' affair, IMO. Plus we just had Tom Hanks in Philadelphia ('93)& Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump('94). I love Hanks as much as the next guy, but we didn't need another Hanks vehicle in '95 winning big for three straight years. That may sound silly, but
You're just anti-Disney and want the song for the R-rated flick that's over 2 hours long to win, not based on the song's actual merit. The Tarzan soundtrack is criminally underrated. Granted the award is Best Original Song, so the award should have either gone to South Park for Blame Canada (it doesn't get more original than that) or to Sarah McLachlan for Toy Story 2 with When She Loved Me which is a song about a toy lamenting the loss of her best friend (again, pretty fucking 'original') Then again, TS2 is Disney as well so I'm sure I won't win you over on that one.

I liked Frost/Nixon fine...it's not Best Picture quality but I liked it. Martin Sheen made it more tolerable...I liked Frost a lot.

Why the dismissal of The Lost Weekend? Sure, some elements are dated, but Milland turns in a terrific performance, and Billy Wilder's direction is top-notch. A well deserved Oscar winner, and certain entitled to a better DVD edition than it currently possesses.
