Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

Never understood the love for Memento upon first viewing. I'm willing to give it another chance at some point, but for now that gets my vote.

"Other"? Why not just add Following and Insomnia?
That's all he's done so far...

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

I voted for The Prestige. Decent flick, but nowhere near as great as some folks make it out to be. 3 stars out of 4. Nothing more.

I haven't seen Insomnia or Following, but I don't recall either being highly praised.

Memento, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight each deserve the kudos they've received. And screw the Academy for ignoring them!

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

Batman Begins has some good sequences, but overall it's just dull, dull, dull.

Plus, Katie Holmes is horrendously awful in it.

And both of the villains are kinda lame.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

I've never seen "The Following"... but every other Nolan film I've either really liked or loved. I wouldn't call a single one of them 'overrated.' Not even close.

In fact, I would call "Insomnia" and "The Prestige" two highly *under*-rated films.

My vote as well. It's still enjoyable, but definitely not worth all the praise. BTW, you forgot to mention the barely watchable fight scenes.

I'm not as enamored with The Prestige as the rest of the world is.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

It seems that several posters are, once again, confusing "most overrated" with "worst". In terms of Nolan, it's got to be The Dark Knight -- the flick simply is not as good as the over-enthusiastic fanboys claim.

Voted for Memento, but it's close between that and TDK.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

Memento is the most overrated IMO... I think it's a very good movie, but a lot of people creamed themselves over it.

I didn't really like Insomnia at all, but it's not held in high esteem.

I will say Insomnia as I preferred the Norwegian version.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

The sample size simply isn't large enough to show a completely "over-rated" Nolan film. Even among movie junkies, I rarely hear anyone talk about any of his work except the Batman films...and those are Batman, not Nolan, films to the general public.

Really, the only one I can even think of that people went crazy over was The Dark Knight, and as much as I want to say it's over-hyped...I'll be damned if I can find anything particularly wrong with it. If anything, I think a case could be made that while everyone was going ga-ga over Heath Ledger, they completely ignored Aaron Eckhart's brilliant performance.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

I don't think any are overrated. Probably the worst one out of the bunch is "The Prestige," but I don't remember it getting exceptional praise when it was released.

Edit: 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. That seems a bit too high for me, I didn't care for it that much.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

I disliked "The Prestige" (wouldn't even recommend it to others), so that got my vote. I figured out the "big reveal" about halfway into the movie, so when the ending came, I was more disappointed than surprised. I do think it's a well-acted/well-shot movie, but I hated the storyline.

TDK by FAR. It was an enjoyable and solid follow up to BB, but it fell well (and i mean well) short of expectation.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

Either "Insomnia" or "Following"..

I don't know if anyone even rates Following though, let alone overrates it, so I'm left with Insomnia. That's my final answer. It's kind of the odd man out of his filmography.

Re: Most Overrated Christopher Nolan Movie

I voted The Dark Knight.

In my defense let me say that I think it's an awesome movie and probably my favorite Nolan film so far (and I like all that I've seen). However the fanboy praise for this makes it overrated. Fantastic flick? Yes. Best Picture worthy? eh, not really.
