Ferrell going back in time for Uni's 'Lost'

Will Ferrell is attached to star in the comedy feature "Land of the Lost," based on the classic television series of the same name. Universal acquired the feature rights from Sid and Marty Krofft, executive producers of the original television series, who will produce the feature for the studio. Jimmy Miller and Julie Wixson-Darmody also will produce via the Mosaic Media Group banner. Adam McKay is attached to direct, with Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas signing on to adapt the screenplay. Universal president of production Donna Langley will oversee the project for the studio. The original "Land of the Lost" series revolved around forest ranger Rick Marshall and his children, Will and Holly, who are caught in a time vortex while exploring the Colorado River on a raft and transported to a mysterious world. The feature film will be an update of the series, which ran from 1973-1977 on NBC and is due out on DVD this month.

If they play this campy.. it should be fun trying to see Ferrell communicate with Chaka! :lol:

After Jay & Silent Bob, this is his second time playing a character named Marshall Wilenholly. Weird.

Well, no. This time he will simply be playing Marshall (last name unknown). Will & Holly will be played by other people.

Plus, the name Marshall Wilenholly was a direct reference to Land of the Lost. That was the joke.

They should base it off the remake show where they drove around the "Land of the Lost" in a magic Jeep that never ran out of fuel.

Marshall was the family's LAST name. The dad's first name was Rick.

Okay, that's out of the way. I think this could be pretty good. They've gotta keep the Sleestaks. As long as they move a little faster than the glacial ones from the original. Maybe add a few more humans in the expedition

"Grindhouse" might have taken a drubbing at the boxoffice, but director Robert Rodriguez is very much in demand. He is in talks to direct a live-action feature version of futuristic 1960s cartoon "The Jetsons" for Warner Bros. Pictures, being produced by Denise Di Novi and Donald De Line.

At the same time, the helmer has met with Will Ferrell and Universal execs for helming duties on "Land of the Lost," based on the 1970s Sid and Marty Krofft fantasy TV series to which Ferrell is attached to star.

While no offers have been made, sources say "Jetsons" has the edge because its script, whose latest draft is by Adam Goldberg ("Fanboys"), is further along. One possible hurdle the studios will have to contend with is Rodriguez and the DGA.

Rodriguez left the guild in March 2004 when it refused his request to share the director's credit with Frank Miller on "Sin City."

Rodriguez could direct a studio movie if he declared himself under "financial core" status with the DGA, paying partial dues but remaining a nonmember.

The whole production would be done under the DGA auspices, with a DGA supervisor on the set. For Endeavor-repped Rodriguez, who is less concerned about such matters, the question is whether he wants to do a space movie or a dinosaur movie

Universal is pushing the button on "Land of the Lost" for a March start. Decision to greenlight the Will Ferrell project surprised observers, who are aware that U had a rough ride with its $160 million comedy "Evan Almighty." Studio sources suggest the budget of "Land of the Lost," described as an event comedy, was recalibrated from $125 million to $100 million in order to earn its start date.

Brad Silberling will helm the bigscreen adaptation of Sid & Marty Krofft's children's skein of the same name. Jimmy Miller is producing along with the Kroffts; Julie Wixson-Darmody and Daniel Lupi exec produce.

Decision to move ahead effectively removes Ferrell from availability for other pre-strike projects on the cusp, such as "Himelfarb" for Warner Bros. The comedian has been attached to "Land of the Lost" for several years. Miller reps Ferrell and the Kroffts, who have long tried to get a bigscreen adaptation of their show made.

Adaptation by Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas revolves around a disgraced paleontologist, his assistant and a macho tour guide who find themselves in a strange world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey people and reptilian Sleestaks.

Donna Langley spearheaded the effort to obtain rights from the Kroffts, who also produced and created smallscreen skeins such as "H.R. Pufnstuf," "Lidsville" and "Donny and Marie."

Big budget comedy. Great idea. Ask the producers of Evan Almighty.

As campy as the original show was, it had great writing by DC Fontana and others and at it's best presented some thought provoking science fiction concepts for a SatAm TV show. I'd rather seem them explore that aspect of the series, not the camp. The show was NOT a comedy when it aired. The potential there is to mine it for a great science fiction franchise, not the next freaking "Starsky and Hutch."

Crap. So much for hoping for a decent remake of that series.

Land of the Lost was VERY well written with some solid Science Fiction concepts - it should have been made as a serious movie in the mid 90's during the Jurassic Park phenomenon.

As a comedy it's probably going to end up as another Starsky and Hutch - crap. The only thing "campy" about the original series was its low budget, and even then the special effects and sets were far better than anything else done for kids shows.

To me this just shows how much the people in Hollywood just don't, "Get it."

Remaking Get Smart as a comedy - makes sense, good idea. Remaking Land of the Lost as a comedy - makes little sense and is a bad idea.

Yes, this is Universal's worst idea since the big-screen remake of Magnum, PI. :mad:

Cool. Hopefully it's an energetic, sometimes sentimental family movie with a neat story. And some cool fx (whether they be new, or an old school homage with some claymation or something).

Hopefully NOT 'retro funny'. Like 'haha look at how self-aware and silly we can make this old show look'.

I have a bad feeling about this movie. Will Ferrel doesnt seem like a good match for Land of the Lost.

Wrong. She received a nomination, but the award went to Tina Fey (the only TV award for any of the "big four" networks). Considering how fascinating and scintillating the award show was, I can't believe everyone doesn't remember.

Bad-Ass I love this show as a kid,It was chessy but Cool as School.

Truly an understatement. I've never seen a good film with Ferrel as the star; the only things I've seen with him in it that I liked were "Old School" and "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". And as far as that goes, only his appearance in "Old School" was any good (and it was quite good, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then). His work in J&SBSB sucked major balls. Everything else he's ever been in that I've seen I could barely stomach, and would not/could not re-watch.

Fans of the kitschy adventure series Land of the Lost will remember these villainous lizard creatures with the single horn and giant eyes. The latest evolution of the species is preparing to menace Will Ferrell in a big-screen remake.

The Land of the Lost film is now shooting on multiple sound stages at Universal Studios, and the Sleestak surface in a temple where Ferrell's character and his two companions (comedian Danny McBride, Pushing Daisies' Anna Friel) are hoping a giant crystal will return them to their own dimension.

The plot involves three adults (not a dad and two kids as on TV) accidentally thrust into a realm ruled by dinosaurs, monkey-men called Pakuni and the murderous Sleestak.

Director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events) says he fought to keep the human shape of the Sleestak from Sid & Marty Krofft's original production, and not give into the urge to render them as spindly computerized beings.

In the '70s TV show, they were guys in lime-green pajamas — and looked it. The Sleestak are much sleeker now, but the film is largely a comedy, so the guy-in-a-suit look has its charms, Silberling says. "There is a sense of humor that I loved from the original show that can only come from an actor trying to negotiate the suit. If it became CG, they'd be too perfect. For the Sleestak to remain in people's memories, it tells you that it was about who was in the suit."

One difference: Instead of toting crossbows, the Sleestak draw quills from their spines and fire them like arrows.

Marty Krofft says nostalgia is a major part of the movie's appeal: "I think they'll cheer when they see the Sleestaks."

i grew up with the early 90's show, looking forward to this but Will Ferrel seems mis cast. From the clip, the T-rex at the end looked pretty bad, looks like its going to be really cartoony and disspointing.

this was a 90's show? i think much earlier...

i would have liked a more realistic, serious approach. i remember the bejesus being scared out of me by those damn, dirty sleestacks.
