They're doing leading actors/actresses after director? This must be some of those "wild surprises" we were told about.

I agree with you on Slumdog, CCOBB and The Reader (and Frost Nixon) but Milk was fantastic. It's a shame you are not seeing it before the telecast.

No, I was just being an asshole because everyone thinks that Saving Private Ryan should have won best picture which I do not agree with.

I'm pretty sure they've done this before in recent years....and damn that was a funny speech from Mickey. "I don't know who you are but these 2 are good"

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.

if only the Oscar Show could aspire to be as edgy and as fun as the ISAs are every year, i think they would have a ton more viewers.

as it is, their conservatorship and playing it safe rules year after year is why the show itself is in decline...that and not nominating the right films!

^ Werd.

Also, could you see the Oscars letting somebody give a 6 minute speech?

I gotta be honest - I'm just flat out tired of Sean Penn in "films that matter".

it was a good speech, funny. the only awkward thing was his shout out to Eric Roberts. i think you have to fully comeback before you can ask Hollywood to help another former talent (if you can really call Eric that) who fell.

but, excellent show and i don't know how AMC can show any of it, it was so vulgar. who knew Melissa Leo was such a potty mouth.

AMC bleeped out all the bad swear words (even bleeping Drew Barrymoore's anal reference), added commericals and cut about 4 minutes of Mickey's speech

Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2008 Nominations Discussion.

Rourke's speech was great, but for me the funniest part of the show was when "Christian Bale" and "Joaquin Phoenix" came out to present an award.

i was wondering. Steve Coogan was Batman right? and it looked, but i don't think it was Horatio Sanz as Joaquin?

I'm surprised they are doing Actress In A Supporting role as the very first award beause they never did that before at least to my knowledge. I hate that they put Best Actress in a leading role almost at the end of the show..ugh now I will not be able to contain myself .. ahhh..LOL!

Coogan was most definitely Bale, but I have no idea who played Phoenix.

They did Supporting Actress in the beginning at least once before, if not multiple times. Personally, I'd love it if they switched things up even more and spread out the big categories across the entire evening. At least that way they wouldn't worry about audiences tuning out during the whole sound/effects/makeup/costume/short film middle section of the Oscars.

I think they always do one of the supporting ones at the very beginning.

I'm pretty sure Supporting Actress has been presented first on several occasions.
