Box Office Weekend (12/19-12-21) - Jim Carrey v. Will Smith v. a big earred mouse

Subscribe
Quote: The question is a toughie: Would audiences rather see Jim Carrey and his slightly-less-rubbery face resurrect the same comic schtick for Warners' "Yes Man" that made him a star, or watch Will Smith save souls while running through the rain in Sony's spiritual tearjerker "Seven Pounds"?

1. Yes Man - $39M
2. Seven Pounds - $23M
3. The Day The Earth Stood Still - $19M
4. The Tale of Desperaux - $13M
5. Four Christmases = $8M
Any guesses?

I say:
Seven Pounds = 27.2 Million
Yes Man = 25.4 Million
Desperaux = 5.6 Million

Your thread is redundant as it mentions Will Smith twice.

I predict

1. Seven Pounds
2. Desperaux
3. Yes Man
4. Day the Earth Stood Still
5. Four Christmases

My estimates:
$27 - Yes Men
$24 - Seven Pounds
$21 - Desperaux

It's no June 2004 (5 movies making over $20m including 3 new movies and 2 holdovers) but should be a semi successful weekend due to the time of year. Could be very wrong, though.

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that similarity.

Looks like we now know:
Box Office: Yes Man with $6.7M Friday and a likely $18.76M; Seven Pounds Headed for $15.63M

Looks like Will Smith's $100 million grossing streak may finally be at an end for this one.

I was expecting a little bigger opening for Yes Man. I'm not too surprised by the Seven Pounds opening.

Look at Twilight, it keeps chugging along.

^Twilight is only $3 million behind Quantum of Solace despite QoS having been out one week longer. I wouldn't have expected that. It appears that Twilight will overtake Bond, at least in the USA (Bond is doing very well internationally, of course).

Really SLOW weekend... weather and shopping really took priority I guess - I was surprised when I saw Yes Man yesterday and there were only like 35 people in the theatre...

Studios can blame the weather all they want, but the fact remains: none of these releases looked all that interesting.

Yeah, how did that happen? Never would've thought that.

NOR would I have thought that a Will Smith movie wouldn't go through the roof. He's one of the very few people that can open a movie. Maybe not anymore?

I'd say the content of the movie, as well as the marketing, limited this from being very big. I don't think this one film is hardly enough to say that Will Smith can't open a movie, considering his last 3 movies probably would have been bombs if it wasn't for him carrying them, especially something like Pursuit of Happyness.

I would argue that none of the releases have looked all that interesting since The Dark Knight came out many months ago. People will always see crappy movies, they won't always see them in a blizzard.

I think he'll still be able to make 100 million dollar movies but the shroud of mystery about this movie really didn't seem appealing. He's really the only major movie star in Hollywood thats been consistent as long as he gets back to what he's known for action movies he'll do fine.
