I'm still getting a "Next" vibe from "Knowing", based on the ads, so I'll probably catch this on TV one day. Count me in if they ever make another National Treasure film though.

Dark City is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I'll definitely be seeing this, plus I'm a Cage fan so that's a bonus.

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

Variety review:
Although made mostly of spare parts, "Knowing" is a not-bad supernatural-tinged sci-fier that has more on its mind than the run-of-the-mill effects-driven extravaganza. Absorbing and able to be taken seriously most of the way, Alex Proyas' generally somber look at a small group of people tipped off about the imminence of doomsday doesn't smoothly synthesize all its elements, and the effects could have used a budget stimulus. Genre fans always looking for something new and awesome may feel like they've seen most of this before, but the conceptual and emotional strength of Summit's Nicolas Cage starrer largely carries the day, which should spell sturdy (box office) in all markets.

I may actually have to check this out. It is over 2 hours if I'm (and IMDB) not mistaken

You sure are lucky the movie isn't 3 minutes shorter.

BUT -- come to think of it, the movie IS under 2 hours without the credits. You better not see it, just to be on the safe side.

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

Thought it was decent. It has a few really cool moments and builds tension nicely, although the score is intrusive and I got an overkill vibe from it... but Cage does a decent job, there are some nice directorial touches and while the FX aren't stellar, they are passable... this movie will divide a lot of people because you can either suspend disbelief and just GO WITH IT (which the movie really does) or you'll turn off as soon as you know what's happening here... I could go with it. Not high art but it was fun and suspenseful enough to be worthwhile.

Thought it was a lot better than it was supposed to be (based on the reviews) and it had me in its grips... until the last few minutes.

Spoiler:

Aliens? Really...? Aliens?

Still, I thought it was pretty entertaining and a lot more violent and grim than most of what Hollywood pumps out theses days. But with that ending, I can't help but get a whiff of studio intervention.

I don't know about studio intervention, that ending screamed "ALEX PROYAS" to me....

I went into this pretty clueless. It was much better than I expected. I can't understand the bad reviews. And as for the twist everyone is freaking out about, I thought it was pretty obvious after the first weird-looking guy showed up. So I guess I just went with it.

Yeah, the twist is revealed early, but even the twist isn't really the twist if you think about the scene between The Whisper People and Cage and his son at the end. That's the real twist of the film...if you catch it.

Totally. I actually thought leaving the theatre: "this would be a kickass double feature with The Fountain right afterwards."

I guess there's several twists. Which are you referring to? I pretty much saw it all coming after they found the picture on the wall of the trailer.

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

Spoiler:
I'm not so sure I'd classify the blonde dudes as simply aliens. It's quite obvious that when they transform to their normal bodies and ascend into the "spaceship" they have what appear to be angel wings. Combined with the biblical references to prophets and how they appeared to humans, basically it's saying that these beings are the basis for modern western religion. Our planet's "Adam and Eve" were probably brought to Earth before their old home planet became no longer able to sustain life by these same beings. Whenever God spoke to a prophet in the Old Testament it was in the form of these whispering men. I wonder what other biblical references there were that I didn't pick up on. I still can't figure out the significance of the black rocks.

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

I liked it. Even the ending didn't bother me because of that scene with Cage and his son followed by Cage and his parents and sister. That made it work for me. And I love how brutal the train wreck was.

Spoiler:
There is a stones reference in the Bible but it escapes me at the moment.

Yeah, those mostly bad reviews are a real head scratcher for me. Because I loved the film. It was pretty intense. Thanks in part to that score. Overall, the acting was top notch, as was the script and direction. Also, the special effects. Will look great on BD. I'd give it 8.5/10

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

I didn't much care for this film, mainly because the story isn't told well at all. There are these leaps you are expected to make as the film gets from its premise to its conclusion that just leaves you scratching your head, even with its allusion to the book of Ezekial (note to screenwriters, if your entire 3rd act is reliant on something that should be explained to most of the viewers, it would behoove the screenwriter to have the film use something to clue in the audience in its storytelling, otherwise, you leave the audience behind, and it just ends up feeling very "deus ex machina-ish". Just a poorly told story.

I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

Re: Know1ng (Proyas, 2009): Nicolas Cage

I won't blab about the flick..but...the film could've been genius had it not simplified some things. I liked it fine. The ending totally screams the director's style. I liked that it didn't pussy out on some of the more obvious things..but it kept being limited by I'd assume a PG-13 rating. So close to artistic genius you can practically taste it..but it cliches itself into blockbuster boundaries when it really gets there..though..the overall ending surprised me that it went that far...predictable yes...but it was nice.
