I've heard Oldboy called a lot of things, boring has never really been one of them.
But then again some people found The Host entertaining. Uggh.

I like Oldboy, but I don't jizz in my pants over it like a lot of people seem to.
I wasn't very open to the idea of seeing a remake, but with Spike Lee now involved I can guarantee I've got ZERO interest in seeing it.

Well...I was half right if this happens. The news was broken by Variety but...since I'm not subscribed to them guess I can't look at it.
After years of playing Batman and other heroes, the original American Psycho, Christian Bale, could be looking to let a little evil back into his career. Read on for the first details.
According to Variety Bale is waiting for The Dark Knight Rises to wrap before picking his next project, which includes a possible stint as the main villain in Spike Lee's adaptation of the Korean thriller Oldboy.
Oldboy tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years he is held captive and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement.
The original film, released in 2003 and directed by Chan-wook Park, won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

hrm....
Spike Lee is set to direct an American version of the South Korean favorite Oldboy, with Josh Brolin looking like the guy to play the lead role. Brolin would be a man who is kidnapped one night and imprisoned for fifteen years for reasons unknown to him. Released back into society just as abruptly as he was snatched, he begins to look for the person or persons responsible for his incarceration. Along the way he meets a young chef who becomes his partner in the search. And now there’s a report that Rooney Mara, of The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is the choice to play that role.
Twitch has the report, and has been first on the ground with other news about the film, including Spike Lee’s involvement, and the casting of Josh Brolin. (Though we’ve also seen tweets from Variety staffers that call Brolin’s participation into question.)
The site says the character for which Mara is a candidate has been named Marie in the script by Mark Protosevich that forms the basis for this film version. (That script is partially new material, partially based on Park Chan-wook‘s South Korean film, and partially based on the manga that inspired that film.)
Twitch has also been one of the sites reporting the word that Christian Bale is a possible choice for the villain of the film, but as of yet we have no reliable word that such a thing is true.
Mara would be a great choice for the character, as David Fincher’s reliance on her for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is probably all the encouragement anyone needs that she’d be prepared to handle the weirder parts of Oldboy. Bale would also be a solild choice for the villain. But at this point, we wait to see what Mandate Pictures and Spike Lee decide to do.

We already know that Spike Lee will be directing a remake of "Oldboy" that has Josh Brolin on board to play the lead character and Colin Firth is attached to play the villain. And now, producer Roy Lee has provided a bit more information, hinting at some of the changes fans can expect.
"We are planning to shoot 'Old Boy' in March and [we] should start pre-production in late January," he said. "This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend). It is very similar to the [original] film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie, because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences - especially fans of the original movie- will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker."
Lee added: "There's going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike's signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie."

Whenever this thread gets bumped and I see the Spielberg + Smith ....I just shake my head.
Whatever Lee/Brolin/Firth do with this will be more interesting than the aforementioned. To be sure.

The hallway fight was the only thing I liked about the original. The beauty was in its simplicity. I don't see how it can possibly be made better.

I never saw the appeal in the hallway fight, yeah it was a single shot but it wasn't particularly impressive and went on for way too long.
Too each their own I suppose, love most of the rest of it with some minor reservations here and there.
I don't really like Spike Lee's "style" so I'm still split on this.
