My favorite is "Dr. Strangelove", which is one of those films I can watch over and over again and never grow tired of. I love "Barry Lyndon" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" almost as much.

I don't think any of his films are overrated - but "Lolita" is my least favorite, by quite a wide margin.

I can't really answer, since I don't know how each of his films are "rated". I would say that my personal opinion corresponds fairly well with general opinion, so I doubt any of his films are really "overrated". I don't think there's any way a film like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Barry Lyndon can possibly be rated too highly.

I think the word "overrated" should be banned, or at least have its usage restricted to individuals without thumbs.

Full Metal Jacket

The first half is a bona fide masterpiece; the second half is the most mediocre piece of film Kubrick set his hands on.

I love you on so many levels right now. Non-gay levels. Not that theres anything wrong with that.

I still don't understand this mindset; the "first half" is completely pointless without the rest of it. The whole damn thing is great, what exactly don't people like about the Vietnam section of the film? Because it isn't as funny and turns depressing? It's fucking war!

I'd say The Killing is the most overrated.

I love just about everything he did. I think Barry Lyndon is his best.

While the first part is masterpiece and the second is a little short of that, both are necessary and complementary.

The Vietnam section is just too generic and way too similar to every other war flick out there. It could have gone a dozen different routes, the one it finally took was simply mediocre. Yes, the second half is necessary to complete the film (obviously), that doesn't mean the quality sustained for the full duration.

OP obviously doesn't like Kubrick so we don't get that option.

So is 2010 a better movie for you? For me it is.

I like most of his movies, although I think both Dr. Strangelove and Lolita are both overrated. I think 2001 is a genuinely incredible experience (certainly not boring). Barry Lyndon is quite possibly the most beautiful film I've ever seen. The Shining is a brilliant psychologically disturbing portrait of confined madness. Full Metal Jacket is like 2 different movies and although well executed, the second half comes off as really not that interesting a conclusion. Eyes Wide Shut is underrated in his canon, but there are good things in it.

Just my thoughts.

The weak acting? The unconvincing, redressed London sets? The shoddy writing? The terrible song selection? Mathew Modine's underwritten role?

Take your pick.

Both are necessary and complementary. That doesn't mean both are good.

"Full Metal Jacket" has always seemed like two different movies spliced together. The basic training is riveting. Then they get to Vietnam and it completely bores me. It's nothing I haven't seen before.

It was really hard to choose one but I went with Spartacus just because it doesn't feel like a Kubrick film to me.
