Re: 80's period pieces

Latter parts of Casino and Goodfellas are both 80s, in Casino when it starts playing "Whip It" we're for sure in it, and Goodfellas even shows the date 1980.

Re: 80's period pieces

Wet Hot American Summer was barely '80s. If they didn't actually tell when the movie was set, I would have guessed it was definitely '70s.

Even in comedies, they don't go far enough. You never see the big, crazy looking perms on women.

I liked the movie too but I can't say it felt like the 80s since the scene over there was still very different from here.

EDIT
I hate when that happens.

It's a horrible movie, but I thought Hot Tub Time Machine was pretty funny.

Re: 80's period pieces

House of the Devil was the best one. It felt like I either time traveled to the 80s or that this had been actually made back then.

American Psycho was awesome but it felt like every time an 80s reference was made it almost felt like a wink*wink nudge*nudge moment especially since the story was a critique of that era. The night life segments actually felt authentic though.

Donnie Darko had visual clues to remind you it was set in the 80s like the mom reading IT, talk about Smurfs, but it just as well could have took place in the 90s or 2000s. Donnie himself looked like a goth/emo kid.

Re: 80's period pieces

Not a movie, but Freaks and Geeks is a pretty definitive portrait of the (very) early eighties.
