What movie do you consider David Lynch's best or your personal favorite?

well since BLUE VELVET is my favorite movie i guess i'll go with it. Really though there's nothing Lynch has done that i haven't liked to some degree. He's one of my top 3 favorite directors.

The Elephant Man is one of the best films of all time, so this tops my list ahead of Blue Velvet

His best is probably BLUE VELVET, but my personal favorite (and the one I voted for) is THE STRAIGHT STORY.

Mulholland is my personal favorite.

Mulholland Dr., but probably for Naomi watts :)

Probably a tie between Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr. for me.

Blue Velvet is in my top 10, so definitely my favorite.

You forgot Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

I voted Mulholland Dr. but I do love Blue Velvet and even though it makes no sense, Lost Highway.

Eraserhead is a very interesting oddity. Can't say I really liked it yet am captivated every time I see it.

Some of the Way over the top performances in Wild at Heart kind of ruin that film for me even though I still enjoy it on that crazy Lynchian level.


Actually, now that I think about it, the only Lynch film I truly don't like is Inland Empire.

My favorite was Blue Velvet for many years, but I'm beginning to think Mulholland Dr. is the superior film.

I've seen Dune much more than the others (and own about 7 different versions of it on DVD), but still count Lost Highway as my favorite.

A part of me wants to say Mulholland Dr., but another wants to say INLAND EMPIRE.

Mulholland Drive for me.

Seems to combine the themes of many of his earlier films into this one - and it's done perfectly.

Eraserhead completely due to psilocybin. What a combo.

Mulholland Dr. is the best film of the decade (thus far). An easy pick for me.

I love Dune.

I have to say Dune. I've watched most of his movies, and own most of those on disc, but Dune is the only one I've watched over and over again.

Shit, I didn't realize it was asking for the Best DL movie. I would probably go with Mullholland Dr. in that case.

first-half of Twin Peaks series is the best stuff he's done imo, but filmwise I've been really into Dune lately.

This is tough. Blue Velvet was my favorite for the longest time, but after watching Mullholland Drive again recently I think that takes the top spot.

Also really love The Elephant Man, Lost Highway, Fire Walk With Me and Eraserhead.

I just picked up Inland Empire, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

I've never seen The Straight Story and didn't really like Wild at Heart or Dune (though I probably need to watch them again ).

I just remember watching "Elephant Man" in the fifth grade thinking i was watching a 40 yr old movie(since if it was b&w then it had to be old) in reality it was 6 or 7 years old at the time. I was shocked when i found out in College that he directed it. I think I'm still a bigger fan of "Blue Velvet".

I understand Blue Velvet being your favorite, it is truly great... but I don't think you can say unequivocally it's his best film. :shrug:

Dune has been my most watched film of those listed, however the liberties taken with Frank Herbert's story didn't have to be so blatant. The most glaring deviation from the book was the introduction of the devices that the Atreides supposedly created which made the Emperor uncomfortable: those which amplified sound to create a destructive weapon against enemies. Those devices don't exist in the book, or in the miniseries created after this movie. That miniseries (including Children Of Dune) was more faithful to the book, but not as lavishly produced. I fully understand that liberties are taken when converting a book to film, but that was over the top. Still, I voted Dune just the same... -kd5-

That was a hard choice! I'm vacillating between Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet...maybe The Elephant Man, and every one of them is brilliant. But the winner for the amazing atmosphere of dread and erotic tension and characters that get into your subconscious and stay there forever...you know it, Blue Velvet.
