It was obviously a "put on"...albeit a very unconvincing one.

Looks like it's goin' (more or less) STRAIGHT TO DVD ... which increases my chances of actually watching it quite a bit.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix to retire from acting.

It was purchased by Magnolia Pictures, which has a low theater count because it debuts it's films via OnDemand and/or HDNetMovies. You should check it out there if you can.

It looks like there will be limited theatrical release Sept 10th, too.

All that work and straight to DVD, oh well! He's gonna have to choose a good action movie for his comeback role!

Well, if the rumors of him replacing Bale as the next BM is true, then that's certainly an encouraging start.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix to retire from acting.

In my mind this was confirmed as a prank the minute JP appeared in public with the beard and rumpled appearance. It was THAT obvious. I can't believe anyone would be so naive as to think any of it was real. Phoenix is a good actor, but he certainly didn't pull off this stunt in a convincing fashion.

Were they ever really trying to fool anyone, though? It's all been acting in front of a camera for a movie. The half-dozen incidents that popped up are the result of filming scenes, not really publicity stunts.

You have to believe Phoenix has a lot of emotion in him about what happened to his brother, and this movie was one way to release some of that and throw up a mirror on what Hollywood can do to people. That anyone would believe this was real shows how valid the commentary is. Perhaps ironically, River Phoenix's popularity is up 51% this week on IMDB (Joaquin's is up 776%).

And I'm sure that, when he shows up on Letterman clean-shaven and articulate, his career outlook will actually be better than it was three years ago.

Unfortunately, I'm guessing none of this will have any effect on people like Lindsay Lohan and the endless parade of enablers.

nope. it's playing at multiple theaters in the KC metro area. and if it's playing in Kansas, it sure as hell is playing elsewhere. Just because it's not opening on 3,000 screens doesn't make it a straight to dvd release.

This is why we must always scan the thread my son, as you'll note a few entries below where I retract, noting that it's getting a limited theatrical release.

At any rate, I think it's a pretty good, entertaining movie which makes some interesting points about the nature of celebrity and life in general.

I'll recommend it even though it's a fabrication.

I don't get why people seem anti-this movie when people dug Borat which is a similar kind of mock doc. I'll check it out eventually, curious to see how it came off.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix to retire from acting.

I saw this today and liked it for what it was. Not the greatest movie in the world, but it held my interest. I'm just not sure what Phoenix had to gain from this whole thing.

He's never seemed to me as someone who does things because there's something to gain. He seems like a very passionate guy and if something interests him, he'll do it, even if it gets him bad press or has some kind of negative impact on his career.

Personally, I've always thought he was talented, he's certainly not hurting for money, so he'll just go right back to making films.

Before that "stunt" on Letterman, he always seemed very shy and an extremely polite, so I look forward to the appearance next week.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix to retire from acting.

i had a feeling Letterman was in on it.. since he was in on the Andy Kaufman / Jerry Lawler stunts in the 70's.

since i wasn't alive in the 70's, i wonder how the impact of each events publicly compare? not that it terribly matters... aside from Phoenix potentially fucking up his career.

Although, correct me if I'm wrong, he was not in on Crispin Glover's in-character shenanigans.
