Same here, though I've only read up to New Moon :)

Not really sure what people were expecting with this film. There have been many stories that play with the Vampire Mythos (Blade/Night Stalkers comics for instance) but everyone was pretty fine with that.

Funny thing is my girlfriend is a huge fan of the Buffy/Angel series, True Blood and so on. She mentioned to me after watching Twilight (and not reading the books first) that she liked it and enjoyed Meyer's take on the Vampire Mythos. She said she particularly enjoyed the fact that all of the Vampires in the Cullen Family
Spoiler:
possess a different trait that makes them special such as Alice being able to foresee the future or Edward's mind reading

Let's face it this isn't the first time (as I mentioned) the Vampire Mythos has been twisted around as of late. I sure as hell don't mind another take on it even if it means Vampires glitter in sunlight :)

Part of me does think the backlash is a mix of the twist of the mythos, who the movie is "marketed" towards and the fact the love story in this movie/book is a little cheesy as well as really overtly-dramatic.

I honestly don't care of people didn't like it because after reading the books or even just watching the movie it didn't click with them. What I don't understand are people who don't like it based on having crazy preconceived notions about it or it's fans.

No i did not actually get laid by her. We went to diff colleges, so we didn't really talk that much after graduation (i don't remember why though, long fuckin time ago). And yes, i have gotten laid (happened over the summer), and the chick who turned down watchin Twilight with me is a newer friend who i actually met via the Mayhem Fest message boards, and met at that concert, and we hang out every once in a while, both of us are in relationships, just one of those "friends who happens to be a female" type. We also ended up seeing Watchmen at midnight together at the muvico theater in arundel mills md.

So is it safe to say that if I hate Buffy, I'm not going to like this? Deciding whether to use a precious Netflix rental on it or not...

Yes. And if you love Buffy.

I think I'll just stick to this thread rather than actually check out this movie. Much easier. :)

I've only liked two vampire-related, uh, things. ANGEL and a short-lived Fox series called Kindred: The Embraced. It may be limiting, but part of why I didn't watch that Angel clone 'Moonlight' is because I have a hard time buying into different post-Whedon mythologies now, especially if they conflict (one has vamps that can go into sunlight, one can't, that kind of thing)

Re: Twilight

I watched Twilight last night. To me, the movie Twilight (I haven't read the books, nor do I care to) is a rehash of the first few episodes of Buffy:

Spoiler:

- Bella moves to a new town (or back to an old one rather) and meets a mysterious, handsome young man who just happens to be a vampire...just like Buffy.

- Before Edward's true identity is revealed, he protects Bella...just like Angel.

- Edward is one of a few "good" vampires...just like Angel.

- Bella and Edward are attracted to one another...just like Buffy and Angel.

- Edward tries to resist Bella, but he feels inextricably drawn to her...just like Angel.

- Bella throws caution to the wind and pursues a romantic relationship...just like Buffy.

- Drama ensues...just like Buffy!!!

That's three-quarters of the movie Twilight right there. The biggest difference between Buffy and Twilight is that Buffy is actually FUN and FUNNY! Twilight is boring and derivative.

But hey, maybe the next Twilight movie will be better. A few of the episodes in the first season of Buffy suck, but season 2 (and onward) rocks.

Speaking of first base...this movie went from tolerable to flat-out ridiculously stupid when we were treated to a scene of vampires playing [i]baseball[/u].

Amazing how this writer can shit all over the very BASIC elements of what a VAMPIRE is and still get people to read/watch this drivel.

Well....in the case of Twilight:

No Boreanaz, no Whedon, no sale. :) (hated Buffy herself, so she's expendable...hated the character, not Gellar)

Re: Twilight

Finally saw this -- "meh" was my reaction. Beautiful cinematography and I thought the two young leads weren't bad, but yeah, wayyyy too slow and emo. As a 37-year-old male I for the first time had the experience of watching a movie and thinking, "this isn't my demographic."

And as a huge fan of "Buffy" and "True Blood" this just seemed very stoic, tame and sanitized to me. Just couldn't quite get past the vamps in daytime thing (and sorry, "We can't go into the sun because we're too shiny?") Not terrible, not great, I can see the appeal to teen girls though and least now I know what all the fuss is about.

Re: Twilight

I thought it was okay, nothing too special. I thought the leads were pretty good but the whole "emo" thing really grows tired, everybody looked so sad in every scene. I didn't mind the changes they made to the traditional vampire mythology, it actually brought fresh blood to the concept. I'll give the next one a shot, but in no way am I on board for all 4 at this time.

I havent seen the movie, but just the look and the some of the actors in it besides Kristen Stewart look awful. the sequel that they showed last night looked horrible too. and they werewolf stuff, so he just turns into a wolf? lame.

I hate watching the MTV awards and hearing the girls scream every two mintues. when they say a name or movie or when they show a clip etc,

Don't kid yourself...Kristen Stewart is pretty awful as well. She comes across as dull and lifeless in pretty much every movie she's in - she comes from the 'perpetually bored and aloof' school of acting. She somehow got cast in some good movies, so she developed a bit of undeserved acting cred.

As far as Twilight goes, I was home from work sick one day and the fiancee had left her copy at my house, so I started to read it. While it's very poorly written (some of the most embarrassingly bad dialog I've ever read), it was readable. I guess I can see what the uproar was about...if I were to make a checklist of things that would start a frenzy among the tween/teen demographic, this book would hit most of the checks. I hated the movie - terribly acted on top of cheap special effects and I just saw the trailer to New Moon and it looks even worse - "important" lines delivered without any feeling, shitty SciFi Channel-grade effects (the wolf looks terrible), and somehow they've found a way to slap even more lipstick on Pattinson. With as much money as they stand to make by making these films good films that stand the test of time, they're coming across like cheap quick cash-in opportunities.

I even thought the naration scenes read by stewart/what ever the hell her characters name is, were really poorly read, almost soft core porn level bad.

You're supposed to ride the cash cow as fast as you can in this day and age of tweens with ADD.

Re: Twilight

according to imbd, this was watched over 10 million times the first 24 hours it was up. Which means either
a.there are alot of fans that are highly anticipating this movie
or
b. the same tween girls watched it over and over and over and over again for rob whats his face.

Re: Twilight

Finally watched TWILIGHT. Was not my demographic even in the slightest (38 y.o. straight male), and as such I was mostly bored. It wasn't HORRIBLE, just relentlessly mediocre to average.

I caught the trailer for the next movie, and all I could think was "Oh jeez, MORE standing around in the forest talking and moping??" I'll give this one the ol' El Paso.
