Planes, Trains and Automobiles, my favorite comedy of all time, with L.A. Story very close behind. Both are examples of films which are balls-out funny and completely effective in their pathos. The ending to Planes in particular always gets to me.

Definitely "other". How did "All of Me" not make the list? Personally I think it's Martin's best performance. But that's just me. My other favorite Martin comedies are "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", "The Man with Two Brains" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".
I hated "Parenthood" with a passion. |
I think the "Tonight You Belong to Me" scene, the song and then the spit joke right after is the epitome of great comedy.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is the one for me.

The Jerk. Hands down.
|
In my opinion, The Jerk is the funniest movie ever. It is so full of great lines from beginning to end. My friends and I quote it all the time.
"Lord loves a workin' man. Don't trust whitey. See a doctor and get rid of it." |
Three Amigos is one of those weird movies like Point Break that isn't really all that great the first time you see it, but the more you watch it, the more it burrows into your brain and stays there. I'd never have once considered it Steve Martin's "best," but Good Lord it's a funny movie to me now in its own slapdash way.
