Empire. Though Raging Bull is a fine choice also.

You indicated in the OP to vote for the best or personal favorite, so I went with Airplane! I can't tell you how many times I've seen it...or made reference to it in conversation. Anytime someone uses the word "Surely" in a sentence, it's required that I add to my reply, "And don't call me Shirley..."

Going with Empire, but I'll admit I may not be totally objective with my selection.

I'm a sucker for writing and so chose ordinary people as the best movie. However, i can watch the blues brothers, caddyshack, empire, and raging ballz over and over again.

BTW, I first saw ordinary people in a DOUBLE FEATURE with the elephant man. talk about being bummed out that night. <do you younguns even know what a double feature is?>

Never realized 1980 was a great year for movies. Most of the titles mentioned I could watch over and over again. But the geek in me says ESB.

I remember them saying when the year was over that it was a bad year at the box-office. I think only EMPIRE was the only hit of the summer.
URBAN COWBOY, BLUES BROS. broke even.
SMOKEY & BANDIT 2 was a small hit.
XANADO, CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC and BRONCO BILLY bombed big time.
