I thought he was decent in Star Trek with his limited screen time and I think he's a good fit for Thor. Great casting and they've got him locked in for a huge deal, so hopefully it works.

I think he can pull off the Thor look just fine, and he seemed like an ok actor.

In this guy's last role he was only on screen for 12 minutes. Let's see if Thor can do better.

"Deadline Hollywood is reporting Chris Hemsworth is set to take on the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, the filmed adaptation of the Marvel comic first launched back in 1962.
Hemsworth can currently be seen on the big screen in Star Trek playing the ill-fated father of James T. Kirk. Finke at Deadline is also reporting he will be playing the lead in United Artists’ upcoming remake of Red Dawn. This, on top of currently filming Cabin in the Woods for Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) who penned that script with Joss Whedon.
Finke adds a small bit of back-story to the casting note saying how Hemsworth tested for the role of Thor early on but was passed on, only to have his agent, William Ward at ROAR Management, recommend his name once again late in the game. They agreed, and after doing so were quite impressed. Branagh reportedly came to town last week and saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today.
Finke lists the following names as actors who also tested for the role: Daniel Craig (turned it down), Kevin McKidd (”Rome”), Triple-H (Blade: Trinity, Charlie Hunnam (”Sons Of Anarchy”), Tom Hiddleston (HBO’s The Gathering Storm), Alexandar Skarsgard (”True Blood”), Liam Hemsworth and Joel Kinnaman."

So the projections for this movie won't be high? I can't see this movie making 250 million plus with a unknown actor.

I don't see Thor coming close to this though unless they hit a home run. There just isn't enough brand-name recognition.

A Star Trek movie has a huge recognition factor plus a massive fan base, so unknown stars can work.
A Thor movie on the other hand is new and is a stand-alone project, so I would think it would need a few heavy-weights to help carry it.

I think Marvel will want Thor to be mentioned in Iron Man II to help generate interest. The other thing is that Thor was well known back in the 80's compared to Iron Man; there were references in Adventures in Babysitting as well as in the Hulk TV movies.

Natalie Portman to star as Jane. From comingsoon.net
Marvel Studios announced today that Academy AwardŽ nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie Thor. In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce Thor. Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

If done right they could develop quite a mythology behind the characters as well as spin out additional sequels ala LoTR...

What has me wondering is how they develop the mythology and how epic that will be when it hits the modern world.

Amon Amarth as part of the soundtrack, assuming they go the rock/metal direction?
