I liked the Burton remake as well. It was competent and entertaining. Not a great film like the original but it didn't try to be. The ending made no sense except to set up a sequel that we will never see.

The best sequel is Escape from.....

I thought it was so funny that Fox included a card in the dvd release explaining the ending of the Burton film. I didn't think it was that difficult to understand. A lot of people complain about the ending, but that was the only part of the film that worked for me. (And the opening credit sequence) The original couldn't have been topped, so the nod to the book was the best possible way to go. Other than making a sequel, which is the path that should have been taken IMHO.

It would be between Escape and Conquest for me. I like how much more bleak and violent Conquest is, though I admit Escape might be a better film. I guess I'll vote Conquest.

What did the card say?
And what was the ending in the book?

An illustration of this idea is underneath then ten plot points are listed.

5. Leo crash lands Delta Pod on Ape planet
6. Oberon crashes thousands of years before Leo arrives and apes take over planet

8.Is it possible someone or something left the Ape planet in Delta pod after Leo?

The end of the novel in a nutshell-

Spoiler:
The astronaut escapes the planet and returns to Earth. When he arrives, an ape awaits him in the landing area. Earth has been taken over by apes as well.

You forgot the double twist at the end.

Spoiler:
The book begins with a framing story about a couple on vacation aboard a space yacht, who find a mysterious bottle floating in space with a manuscript inside. At the end of the book, we return to the couple, who have a good laugh after reading the story -- imagine, humans building spaceships! What a preposterous joke!
