Well in my mind some movies SHOULD be rated R and some should be PG-13. I dont think this has much of a chance to be a good film considering it is PG-13.

Why does this film need to be rated R? We're not talking about Saw here.

Its just been my experience that American emotional dramas with star filled casts tend to be better if they are rated R. Just out of past experiences with similar films.

I can't see why anything like this would require an R rating to tell the story.

Is it me or does Jaime Foxx resembles Floyd Mayweather Sr in this film:

When I first saw the trailer I thought it was one of those fake movies in the beginning of Tropic Thunder, yeah I think this movie looks that bad.

I read the book and it was really good but looking at the trailer it looks nothing like the book at all. They put downey jr's role in a bad light but in the book he is well liked, a family man etc. Still look forward to seeing it though.

Oh and this could even be PG....aside from language there is nothing that would even come close to drawing an R rating

Re: The Soloist (Wright, 2008) - Foxx and Downey Jr.

60 Minutes recently had a piece on the real life people this is based on. It was interesting stuff, but I'm not sure how it'll work as a movie.

Spoilers regarding the real Nathaniel Ayers' (the guy played by Foxx) life...
Spoiler:
His overall life would make a pretty good story arc... he was a musical prodigy as a youth and went to Julliard before schizophrenia ruined it all. There's a good tragedy film in that story. But it appears they are focusing on the more recent relationship between Ayers and the reporter who 'rediscovered' him, which is sweet and uplifting but will probably make a less interesting film.

Man you are reaching with Ray II poster. I don't see any similarities with this and Ray except it being about two musicians. Ray didn't end up on the streets, schizophrenic. The movies are in a different era. Who is the Robert Downey Jr character in Ray?

I think many of you are going to be surprised by the quality of this picture when it opens. It is most certainly not “Ray II.”

I want to see it. Two of my favorite actors. I was surprised when I saw the poster for this in theater last Fall and it said "November 2009" on it. I was seeing full-trailers in December or so. Then I see it was bumped up to May.

This movie looks good. It is just weird...once second I see Jamie Foxx in this serious role in a film and the next second he is rapping on television. It just isn't believable. I feel like he wants the best of two industries and it doesn't work for me. The duo, with RDJ looks good though.

Re: The Soloist (Wright, 2008) - Foxx and Downey Jr.

Variety review:
Neither rarefied art film nor widely accessible inspirational drama, "The Soloist" falls between the cracks both creatively and commercially. Based on the real case of a newspaperman finding a former musical prodigy homeless on the streets of Los Angeles, Brit director Joe Wright's first American feature has moments of power and imagination, but the overworked style and heavy socially conscious bent exude an off-putting sense of self-importance, making for a picture that's more of a chore than a pleasure to sit through.
