"Harry Brown": Michael Caine as vigilante in UK crime thriller
From Variety:
I hope this isn't yet another tired Death Wish retread, Michael Caine deserves better.
Distrib Lionsgate U.K. has acquired U.K. rights to Marv Films' contemporary British crime thriller "Harry Brown," which stars Michael Caine.
Caine plays an elderly former serviceman drawn to vigilantism while living in a rundown burb rife with gangs, guns and drugs.
Topical pic, which stars Emily Mortimer ("The 51st State") as a police woman, is directed by Daniel Barber, who was Oscar nommed for short "The Tonto Women."
Pic is produced by Marv's dynamic duo Matthew Vaughn and Kris Thykier, and Keith Bell ("The Descent"), who bought the project to Marv. Gary Young, who worked with Bell on "The Tournament," wrote the script.
" 'Harry Brown' is a modern urban Western that reflects the stark realities of youth crime in the 21 century both in the U.K. and internationally," commented Thykier, adding that Caine's role "is an exciting and contemporary take on the iconic characters like Harry Palmer ('The Ipcress File') and Jack Carter ('Get Carter') that originally brought him to fame."
To former-PR maven Thykier, "The themes of the darkness in young society and of two generations at odds with each other are both timely and important. From my marketing background, I am keenly aware that, as the U.S. enters the election and we enter election year here, these issues are likely to be very front-of-mind next year when 'Harry Brown' debuts."
Thykier reports that Caine was drawn to the project by the script, which resonated personally with him: "He also grew up in a council estate and served in the forces in Korea so was touched by the story."
Zygi Kamasa, CEO, Lionsgate U.K., envisages a "hugely commercial release next year," noting that the acquisition "continues our remit to support mainstream British films."
Hanway Films is handling worldwide sales on the pic, which is being promoted at the Toronto Intl. Film Fest.

You just can't hate Caine...I think I'd be scared or a bit disturbed if Caine yelled at me. He seems like such a peaceful guy. At least him cursing isn't weird like Freeman cursing.

Caine was the first choice for the lead in The Limey, and this looks like a worthy replacement for that could-have-been situation. Looks awesome too.

Yeah, hits the beats we all know it has to hit but it looks pretty good. I love me some Michael Caine.

Dying to see this. British gangster/crime flicks is my favorite genre and Get Carter is one of the best. Hope it's nice and gritty.

The DVD had the trailer and a music video (go figure) of the Get Carter theme. Kind of cool. But we definitely need a good high quality upgrade. Would be great to get Caine's thoughts so many years later in a commentary.
Harry Brown looks great - a throwback to Get Carter, as if we get to see what would have happend had GC ended differently.
EDIT: Here's the video for Get Carter that's on the DVD.

Count me in. Let's just hope that when it gets a US release it isn't trimmed down to a 90 minute, PG-13 mess of a film

Looks pretty cool, but I have my doubts that the final product will be an awesome Death Wish-esque film like the trailer promotes. Guess we shall see...

I saw this yesterday finally.
Michael Caine was excellent as usual. The film really was extreme in many ways, including showing the criminals and their crimes.
I enjoyed it.

I saw this the other day. The few scenes where Caine enacts his vigilante revenge are awesome, the rest of the film is underwhelming. Definitely places last amongst a few somewhat similar-minded flicks of the past year or so, like Gran Torino and Taken.

Yeah it wasn't a great film by any means, but it was great watching Caine at his craft.
I guess that's why I enjoyed it like I did. The movie also went so far to make you want to see him 'vigilante the hell' out of the bad guys too, so the payoff was sweet.

At the Empire Magazine Movie Con this year we saw about 15 minutes of footage and that was followed by a Q&A with the director and one of the actors. The clips shown are quite hardcore with the way the violence is shown. Quite graphic.
What was kinda cool was they filmed most of the film on a housing estate in South London. It's the same estate that Caine was brought up on.
I think it's a film I can wait on but the reviews over here are very positive.

Oh it's a gritty and hardcore film no doubt.
It could have been a better movie overall, but Caine is excellent and makes up for it.
