Milk (Van Sant, 2008)

Surprised not to find a thread on this. From the film's IMDB page:

The story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by San Francisco Supervisor Dan White.
A big ol' spoiler there, but I doubt any coverage of this film won't mention Milk's murder.

Director: Gus Van Sant
Writer: Dustin Lance Black
General Release Date: 12/5/08 (US)

Cast:
Sean Penn ... Harvey Milk
Josh Brolin ... Dan White
Emile Hirsch ... Cleve Jones
James Franco ... Scott Smith
Diego Luna ... Jack Lira

For me, one of the most anticipated films of the fall season!

For me as well. Now that the disposable drek of summer is thankfully behind us, we can turn our attention back to films of substance.

PopcornTreeCt 09-03-08 09:41 PM

I'm not holding my breath. I only like Van Sant when he's making small indies.

To Die For was an entertaining, smart film, and I've always had a soft spot for Good Will Hunting - maybe it's because for once a movie got the Boston accent right. Let's all just pretend Finding Forrester and Psycho never happened, shall we?

EDIT: I totally forgot about Even Cowgirls Get the Blues - ye gods, what a spectacular misfire!

JumpCutz 09-03-08 09:53 PM

I'm hit or miss with Van Sant, but that is one fantastic trailer. Count me in.

CloverClover 09-03-08 10:50 PM

it seems he is using the same voice he used for I am sam

Artman 09-03-08 11:00 PM

Looks like it could be a good movie, but it doesn't interest me.

Just because some media outlets *might* ruin the story it doesn't mean go ahead and do it.

Seriously what the hell man?!

You even say they spoil it by giving this info and then you quote the info they gave.

Thanks a ton. Good job dingus.

Please. It's a historical fact. Just because you're uninformed doesn't mean it's a spoiler.

Just because it's based on a true story doesn't mean it's a historical fact. If it was jfk or the titanic you might have a point, but not a lot of people know this story, it's really not that well known. And that the op notices it's a spoiler and mentions its a spoiler and doesn't spoilerize the text then yeah it is a spoiler. And at the very least spoilerize the text. It's not difficult.

wendersfan 09-04-08 08:21 AM

It's not a spoiler. Harvey Milk's assassination was big news and going into the movie knowing about it isn't going to be a problem.

Geofferson 09-04-08 09:01 AM

Glad to see Van Sant take a step away from his recent avant-garde experiments -- much anticipating this.

Tarantino 09-04-08 11:28 AM

Looks like a one way ticket to boringsville.

Perhaps someone can persuade Van Sant to add a few fart jokes and explosions post-production to keep you amused.

Tarantino 09-04-08 12:03 PM

That might work. Or maybe an explosion or a car chase, here and there. Either way.

Well, there will be....
Spoiler:
an assassination!

freshticles 09-04-08 01:55 PM

This looks really good so I hope it doesn't make me fall asleep in 30 minutes like Elephant and Last Days did.

BDB 09-04-08 02:01 PM

I like the look of the trailer, I'll be interested in how they show SF, I saw some of the stuff from the castro in the media here, when they were filming.

I'll be there. I'm sure watching it in SF will be great!

actually is a historical fact because it happened in history. you know the past. so whether you or anyone else knew about it or not doesn't mean it didn't happened.

'Last Days' felt endless, 'Elephant' though I thought was rivetting.

Looking forward to seeing 'Milk'

Zen Peckinpah 09-04-08 03:42 PM

Looks fascinating, and while the subject matter sells me immediately the cast is the main attraction here. Penn? Brolin? Hirsch? Franco? Luna? Sold.

Danny Elfman's also scoring...love his dramatic work (Midnight Run and Good Will Hunting among them).

riley_dude 09-04-08 04:40 PM

Saw the preview this morning. Looks amazing.

Hear, hear!

NoirFan 11-12-08 11:23 AM

A couple of short clips.

Goat3001 11-12-08 12:16 PM

I'm not so big on Van Sant. Hated Last Days and thought Elephant was good just somewhat boring. The trailer looks good though so I'll be sure to check this out pending some reviews.

Giles 11-12-08 12:33 PM

has the release date been bumped forward? - Landmark theatres have been posting end of November dates, whereas I though it was early December at one point.

Seantn 11-12-08 04:55 PM

The trailer says November.

I do believe Milk is one of those limited release dates first releases (like Brokeback Mountain or Atonement). They release it in select markets at first and then start a wider campaign.

NoirFan 11-18-08 05:33 PM

Watch six clips from the film.

NoirFan 11-24-08 10:22 AM

Watch interviews with Hirsch, Alison Pill and Franco.

Matthew Chmiel 11-24-08 11:21 AM

The film opens on Wednesday in select cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, etc.) with a wide release happening on December 5th.

This has been Focus Features' main way of distributing films for the past year or two now. Release it in a handful of theaters on week one to get buzz going and wide release it the second weekend.

riley_dude 11-24-08 11:27 AM

I will be seeing it Wednesday in San Francisco. Looking forward to it.

The Antipodean 11-24-08 11:41 AM

Great trailer, having read The Mayor of Castro Street a few years back it really seems like Penn has got Milk. (Get it? Got Milk? Ah, I kill me....)

Got Chocolate Milk will be the sequel.

chris_sc77 11-25-08 04:06 PM

I'd say this is a lock for a Best picture Nomination at this point judging by the nearly unanimously positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Also the Academy loves a biopic.

riley_dude 11-28-08 12:57 PM

Saw it Wednesday and Loved it. Great script and Sean Penn is amazing.

DVD Guy ATL 11-28-08 01:03 PM

"The Times of Harvey Milk" is an excellent documentary for those who are interested in seeing the real subjects:
DVD Talk review

Will try to see this new film sometime over the weekend... can't wait!

danstheday 11-28-08 11:20 PM

This is an AMAZING FILM. Anyone who wants to see a film where every actor in it shines and is well directed must go see this!! It is scarry how close California Prop.6 that they deal with in the movie and the Prop.8 gay marriage ban that we just voted on mirror eachother not only in prop.'s but in reaction and the way they ran the for/against propaganda. Shawn Penn Shines in this role! Well worth the $9 and thirty miles we drove to see it!

BDB 11-30-08 01:40 AM

Watched this tonight, obvioulsy I watched in SF, so the audience were very receptive to it.
I loved it, all the cast were fantastic. Penn was excellent, very understated performance, and I have to say James Franco was phenomenal.

Danny Nicoletta was at our showing doing a Q&A Afterwards which took a little time to get off the ground but was very interesting.

As dan above mentions the parallels with prop 6 / 8 are eerie.

Great film, and I hope it does spectacularly well.
