Beat me to it. NO ONE has had a bigger fall than Roland Joffe.

To me it's John Carpenter after 1984's STAR MAN it was downhill.
Oliver Stone is there now too.

I disagree with Soderbergh. Especially considering his output this decade has included the Ocean's trilogy, Bubble, and Solaris.

I also disagree with Rodriguez. I feel that he only has three real failures; The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Spy Kids 3-D. Everything else the man has made has been pretty solid.

Dario Argento hasn't had a consistent track record since Opera. The Stendhal Syndrome and Sleepless were solid, but everything else in the past twenty years has been completely scattershot.

John Carpenter hasn't made a decent film since In The Mouth of Madness. One could even argue his output prior to that as well (I have soft spots for Big Trouble in Little China and They Live).

Roland Joffe's career was fucking done with once he was brought in to finish Super Mario Brothers.

that isn't what makes it a bad film, even if it was a bad film.

this is exactly the same that can be said of the original ocean's eleven
oops

Excellent point, except that this was the original Ocean's Twelve. There was an original Ocean's 11 with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas. And it was a piece of shit. Soderberg's Ocean's 11, while far from a masterpiece, was a capable and pleasantly diverting caper film. This first sequel was lazy and disinterested, IMO. Clooney all but apologized for it on the Ocean's 13 press junket.

Different strokes and all that jazz, but to me Ocean's 12 was just plain awful.

The Departed was somewhat of a return to form, but Scorsese's best work is definitely behind him. There is no way that Gangs of New York or The Aviator can compare to Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or Mean Streets. And Shine a Light vs. The Last Waltz? Forget it. Shine a Light is about twenty years too late for the band and the director - they would have made a hell of a team in 1978. Scorsese seems content to make primarily bio-pics and documentaries these days, abandoning the personal cinema of his heyday: his next two projects are an untitled George Harrison doc and DiCaprio as Theodore Roosevelt.

Actually, before he makes those films about Roosevelt & Harrison,

Scorsese's next project is

Shutter Island (2009) - Leonardo DiCaprio/Mark Ruffalo/Ben Kingsley/Emily Mortimer/Michelle Williams/Max von Sydow/Jackie Earle Haley/Patricia Clarkson/Elias Koteas/Ted Levine

Shutter Island tells the story of a U.S marshell Teddy Daniels, and his Partner Chuck Aule and their search for an escaped patient of the Shutter Island mental institution run by Dr. Cawley and the Warden. Through his search Teddy finds hidden secrets about the Island, the patients, his partner, and even himself. Remember Things aren't always what they seem to be...

Friedkin and Coppola were the first names that came to my mind.
