The Monster Squad being remade...say it ain't so

A report on Ain't It Cool says that Paramount has bought the rights to The Monster Squad and is planning a possible remake with Rob Cohen producing.

To me this is absolutely horrible news. I love the original and can clearly remember as a kid it being one of my favorite movies. To me it stands on par with The Goonies.

I'm sorry but as most of the remake ideas go, this is one of the worst. I have a hard time believing that with all the PC-ness of Hollywood anymore that they'd have the guts to call one of the members Fat Kid and call a five year old a "little bitch".

This is not good news.

Rob Cohen? Shoot me now. You KNOW this is going to be a bloated orgy of CGI and crappy acting. I feel sorry for whatever director decides to tackle this project and, in turn, fuck my childhood in the ass.

If Rob Cohen is involved, I hope that he gets the guys who did the pyrotechnics for Stealth. The movie is flat. The explosions are some of the best I've ever seen.

Cohen apparently isn't directing. But he does have a hand in the pyro, it could make for some really good 'dynamite' scenes.

And I'd like to smash the nose of whoever OK'd those crappy 'Made In China' lookin weapons in XXX. Some of the worst ever. Like the camcorder video screen rocket launcher.

So let me get this straight... For over 10 years they didn't see enough appeal in the film to release it on DVD and now they want to remake it?

What's next? A remake of Night of the Creeps before the original even makes it to dvd?

I can just see it now in the remake: The character of "Slightly Overweight Kid" kicking a CGI Wolfman in the nards.

Except "nards" will become some other clever and witty nickname for testicles like "giggleberries", "cumsack", "shmeckle", etc.

Slightly offtopic, but; after reading this thread, I remembered IMDB'ing the fat kid about two years ago only to find out that he had died of hypothermia or something like that.

He died in 1997 (age 22) of pneumonia, sadly.

The teacher won't be "homo-ing out" this time, that's for sure.

I'll see it if Shane Black is involved and they actually use his ideas for the first film that could not be achieved due to the original's budget.

Spoiler:
For example, Shane Black originally wrote the openning with Van Helsing arriving on a Zeplin and a fight against dozens of Dracula's brides on horseback.

Why does everyone get so pissed over remakes?

Deal with it.

Re: The Monster Squad being remade...say it ain't so

Because we know ahead of time that it's going to suck. There's no possible way anyone, even Dekker himself, could make a better version of TMS today. Especially if PD is involved. That's the kiss of death for horror these days.

I'd rather they remade mediocre/crap flicks than cult classics.

Re: The Monster Squad being remade...say it ain't so

Yeah but it's not like the originals cease to exist due to a crappy remake.

If anything it's a potential reason for a BD release of the original a'la Clash of the Titans.
