Which Criterion DVDs would a person with "modern" tastes like?

I don't like old movies. Never seen Casablanca (saw snippets and didn't seem interesting), not interested in Carey Grant, It's A Wonderful Life, North By Northwest, etc. I like modern movies (and they don't necessarily have to be popcorn movies). There's a certain vibe to post 80's movies.

Here are some of my favorite movies:

The Forbidden Kingdom
The Matrix
Equilibrium
Primal Fear
Dead Poets Society
School Ties
In Bruges
Prime
Office Space (movie I've seen the most... every time I hate my job )

The current DDD Criterion sale has me in the mood to sample Criterion DVDs (from the library, Netflix, and Blockbuster). Which ones do you think I'd enjoy the most?

Thematically, I like anything to do with psychology, courtrooms, and medicine/doctors. I love coming-of-age stories in the sense of Dead Poets Society where you have an all-male ensemble (for some reason an all-woman ensemble doesn't do it for me ).

Thanks!

You should check out La Haine. It's a French movie about four teens from the otherside of the tracks in Paris. Not really action packed but loaded with lots of drama. One of my favoriets of all time. Unfortunately, its the only Criterion I have seen. You might like Wes Anderson films or Terry Gilliam's film entitled Brazil.

I'll jump on some of the obvious ones:

The Rock (Michael Bay)
Armageddon (ditto)

Do The Right Thing (fantastic movie and set)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (pretty trippy)

GATORDEB,
I have the exact same taste as you. I would recommend:

Brazil
Chasing Amy
Fat Girl
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
La Haine
Man Bites Dog
The Rock
Rushmore

Not Armageddon and Robocop(because both are not anamorphic)

Larry: I know all about Salo, but thanks for the warning I plan to rent it when the reissue comes out, as I enjoy a freaky film as much as the next person.

First film up: La Haine! Have to get through Weeds BD first but should have within a week and a half. Maybe I can do a Criterion movie a week

Well, then it's a good thing I have them!

I would also add these to the list of essential Criterions for the non-believers (eventhough they've all been mentioned, I second them):

Dazed & Confused (one of my favorite movies, finally done right)
Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas
The Royal Tenenbaums (one ups Rushmore, methinks)

Armageddon
The Rock

Seriously.

Dazed & Confused, Fear & Loathing, and Royal Tenebaums are too artsy for you. If you had said Primer instead of Prime I'd may be open to suggesting more for you.

Just saw La Haine for the first time and I was seriously impressed. Its presentation - particularly its cinematography - is stunning. Great use of soundtrack, solid acting and very real script. Very impressive and well-made film, I thought. If you liked Taxi Driver then La Haine would probably be a safe blind-buy.

Yet somehow I manage to live without either.

I guess the most likely one would be Brazil. You say you don't like "old" movies. Define "old". To me, old is pre-war (1939 or earlier). I doubt that's your definition.

Not a Criterion, nor new, but if you like "psychology and courtrooms” you may like Anatomy of a Murder. It is a truly great film.

Errr, I just finished The Ice Storm and to be honest I am angered and offended at how awful the writing in this film was. I'm positively confounded at what you guys see in the movie; it's honestly one of the 3-5 worst movies I've seen all year (of about 150)

If you're looking for newer movies, why not just find the ones you want regardless of who produces them? In my opinion, Criterion forte is restoring older and hard to find movies and adding rare content for extras. For newer movies, there are now many high quality producers who create just as quality a print (usually for less money) with just as quality extras.
