Dear Lord, please make sure this never happens to me because I don't think I could handle suicide. Fast, early acceptance into an Ivy League school and please let it be Harvard. Amen.

Just saw this, thought it was so-so. I read a DVDTalk review afterward that described it as "overindulgent" and that basically sums up how I felt about it. The script was definitely memorable, but I didn't dig its runaway plot or Christian Slater's creepiness. Very American Psycho-esque movie, I thought.

I saw this movie in 1989 in a small theater, and *loved* it more for its iconoclastic attitude and caustic one-liners than its storyline, which I found (and still find) to be shrill, self-absorbed, and mostly pedantic.
What I found most interesting about the movie, is that (much like Fight Club, a movie which is VERY similar in spirit) a lot of people missed the point; that it's about growing a pair of balls, quitting your endless bitching, and realizing that life is never going to be simple, easy, or straightforward, so butch up and deal with it ya stupid pansies. The Mom in the film spelled it out for Winona Ryder (and the audience), yet all a lot of people seemed to take from it were the "quotable lines" and anti-authoritative slant... I found the movie to be a much more stronger argument for psychological conformity than many would care to realize.
Still though. Plenty of nice groin.

I don't think I've ever read a post on this board that I agreed with more (script over plot).
And I wrote a term paper on Fight Club for a film class last spring that explored the intricacies of that movie's satire; Fight Club (though I love and appreciate what it set out to do) always strikes a nerve with me for exactly the reason you cited. I think the comparison to Heathers is valid.

I finally got around to watching it after hearing all the praise.
I think its an OK movie, but it didn't really click with me.
