It could be great (or suck) so I'll give it a chance.

Love the DVDTALK review!

Russ Meyer had breasts, Tarantino adores feet, and Larry Bishop can't get enough ass

This is only playing on one screen in all of Vegas this weekend ...

... and by God, I am so fucking there.

It also helps that it's playing at a Regal and I have some free passes. :)

Matthew Chmiel 08-20-08 05:00 PM

Late to the party, since probably nobody will care, but I saw the movie the last night <s>it played in Vegas</s> it played nationwide in it's quick one-week release.

I went with some buddies of mine and we all walked away disappointed. I would match it with The O's review of the flick (three out of five stars), but I feel for the material at hand, it could've been a lot better. Lots of female nudity, which everyone enjoys, but I think it could've had more action as well (the climax is pretty anti-climatic).

The dialog at times is a lot of fun (reminiscent of Tarantino films), but at other times, it's also pretty bad.

It's good for a rental off Netflix, but a purchase, probably not.

OldBoy 09-16-08 09:15 PM

what the hell ride happened to this release?

That seems to imply movies like this would have gotten a regular release if Grindhouse never came out, which I doubt sincerely.

The Weinsteins are fucking morons and can't release any film properly?

Rypro 525 09-17-08 04:56 AM

I think their whole logic was (similar to the Southland Tales release), release it in 50 theaters, not advertise it at all, and hope it does $20,000 a screen, then release it wider, but when you don't advertise it at all, people aren't going to go. Hell i nearly talked a friend of mine to go to georgetown to see Southland, but it closed the day we were supposed to go.

chuckd21 09-17-08 07:17 AM

Larry Bishop? Mad Dog Time Larry Bishop? Ugh.

Seriously it's really, really bad

Seantn 09-19-08 05:03 AM

Yeah, judging by the box office, I think they made the right decision. I know, there was no marketing besides a trailer and poster, but still...the movie would have bombed either way. If Grindhouse didn't make money, this would have made even less.

Southland didn't even come to Vegas.

At least all of these Third Rail Releasing flicks Weinsteins have been putting out are making their way to Vegas (Hell Ride, Diary of the Dead, The Promotion, etc).

Came out on DVD and Blu yesterday. For those interested, it's $19.99 for the Blu-Ray on bestbuy.com.

Zen Peckinpah 11-02-08 10:21 PM

Okay, I just got done watching this.

I have loved everything Tarantino's had his hand in. I think Jackie Brown is an understated masterpiece of semi-departure, and Death Proof is grossly misunderstood for his ingenious genre-bending and eye-popping dialogue. I love From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, and many other QT-branded pictures, and I even think Hostel isn't too terrible of a film.

Then there's Hell Ride, a movie I should love for what it revers in, but I don't. It's a piece of shit, playing out as if Hunter S. Thompson viewed a triple feature of Kill Bill, The Devil's Rejects, and No Country for Old Men back to back after downing a sheet of acid with a trusty Wild Turkey bottle and sent the resulting review to Rolling Stone. But unlike how ingenious the Duke was at writing while on drugs, this movie is an utter failure of playing like it was shot on drugs.

Problem is, there's no point at all. It's so misogynistic it makes Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia look like Steel Magnolias, written like a retarded Rob Zombie, and acted with as much charisma as a ten-day-old piece of toast. Which is a shame, as this is a film with Michael Madsen, Dennis Hopper, and David Carradine, the latter of whom appears for approximately 6.3 seconds. The premise is decent, but the movie revers in so many disposable elements that the 84-minute running time feels much, much longer. As someone who has written some shoddy screenplay material (which has vastly improved over the years), my writing (which featured often less logic than this does) was more grounded in reality and structure than this overdose on style over substance. May I also point out that not only am I a die-hard Tarantino fan, but this is all coming from a person who owns Domino on DVD. So yeah, there's my opinion.

And don't get me started about the comically anticlimactic and implausible ending. It's like Larry Bishop (the writer/director/star) was just sitting at his laptop, and, finally satisfied with his work, he just got up from his seat to go to bed, shrugged, and said, "fuck it."

To quote The Big Lebowski, yeah, fuck it. That's what they all say.

Thumbs way, way down. I haven't been as pissed off by a movie since the Halloween remake, possibly the last X-Men movie, since this also had Vinnie Jones. But here, instead of fucking up one of the most awesome X-Men villains out there he's playing a retarded version of Anton Chigurh.

EdTheRipper 11-03-08 08:41 PM

I just finished watching this. It's really not a good movie. At all. Yet for some reason I really can't explain, I found myself enjoying it. Weird.

Just got done with it on Cinemax and (Fittingly) it is late at night at the moment.

Quite weak in the action department.

Terrible in the story department (Although there's some surprisingly eyebrow-raising dialogue-exchanges that you just don't hear everyday! Kudos to Bishop on this)

So-So with the acting. (And in the wake of recent events, it becomes quite disheartening when David Carradine shows up)

But GREAT with the T&A and music (A combination of vintage biker-movie tunes along with a good, original biker-score)

Didn't check out any of the other reviews to see if there was mention of it's short-running time (Which the movie benefits from) but it is worth a look as far as "Late-night-mindless-movie-viewing" goes.

Oh, and Leonor Varela  She doesn't get nekkid like every other chick in the movie, but it was great to see her again since....Blade 2.

I watched a good-sized chunk of this on some HD channel a few weeks back. What a total piece of shit. I thought Bishop was joking around when I saw his "acting" in the film, then I kept watching and realized that he was being serious. Ouch.
