Anyway, Pulp Fiction followed closely by Leon.

I'm in 100% agreement to everything in your post if you swap the order of Leon and Pulp Fiction in your last sentence.

Wow, great year.

From the list: Pulp Fiction. One of my favorites of all-time. It's so re-watchable and quotable it makes me sick... but I love the hell out of it.

Not from the list: Dellamorte Dellamore. Fantastic zombie classic from Michele Soavi.

Once Were Warriors
Death and the Maiden
Hoop Dreams

I love Quiz Show and Shawshank, but Pulp Fiction tops 1994.

Forrest Gump. Followed closely by Pulp Fiction and then Shawshank. 94 was an incredible year for film - but Oscar DID get it right.

Forrest Gump or Shawshank Redemption as best movie of 1994 is vomit-inducing.

My Other Self 07-07-08 08:56 PM

Pulp Fiction
Shawshank
Clerks

and Speed and Naked Gun 33 1/3 and... Police Academy 7.

I enjoy them. Sue me.

king3style 07-07-08 11:00 PM

Shawshank...for sure. Best movie ever.

Why? Does everything have to be dark and gritty in order for Film Snobs to enjoy?

IDrinkMolson 07-07-08 11:15 PM

Tough call between Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. But, I saw Pulp Fiction 7 times in the theater, so, winner.

Don't worry, it's just Arpeggi. I wouldn't look too much into it.

Pulp Fiction easily.

Look, I loved reading Shawshank as a novella, I was thrilled when it was made into a film and still enjoy watching it to this day -- but still it's just a well made prison melodrama. No subtext. No shockingly original direction. No eminently quotable lines of dialog. Just a really good film. I'm sorry, I just don't get the undying love for it -- I chalk it up as an internet/IMDB phenomenon where the legend of its greatness just grew as the years went by. At the time, it was a minor surprise to even be in the running for Best Picture. It didn't win a single critic's award in 94. I'd take it any day over the Oscar winning Forrest Gump, but I'm still puzzled about how this nice little film suddenly got elevated to the top of the IMDB list. People really think it's superior to Godfather? Casablanca? Citizen Kane? Goodfellas? Empire Strikes Back? Dr Strangelove? Taxi Driver? REALLY???? :hscratch:

abe55 07-08-08 01:22 AM

I can almost guarantee you that many people don't consider The Shawshank Redemption better than those movies you listed. It's a movie that most people enjoy, thus it will get rated highly by many. Besides a couple of film snobs like Arpeggi who have to dislike the movie in order to fit into that tiny group of film snobs, most enjoy it, including myself. I've never seen Pulp yet, so I can't say if it's better or not. I haven't seen it mainly because I think most of the other work of Tarantino's is utter garbage.

Decker 07-08-08 01:28 AM

Don't let that stop you. Pulp is so superior to his other films, it's shocking. The movie is totally riviting and absolutely enjoyable even if it glorifies despicable behavior. It's a movie I can watch a hundred times and not get sick of. It's one I can watch any 15 minutes of and enjoy myself in the process. I consider it as good as any of those films I listed above. For real.

Would be my number two behind Pulp Fiction, however.

Ahh...the world of the Internet, where Forrest Gump and Titanic suck eggs and Lord of the Rings is an epic of Citizen Kane proporitions. :)
