Original Cut (Full length) version of Lang's METROPOLIS has been located!!!

As most film buffs will know, the original cut of Metropolis only screened in Germany, and for a very limited run. The film was then significantly cut down for every other market in the world. Rumour has always been that the original German cut was almost twice as long as the international version, but no copy of that cut had even been located..

UNTIL NOW.

A full 210 minute German cut of the film has been located in Buenos Aires. Coming in at 33 minutes longer than Kino's "restored" version from a few years back, this could significantly alter the pacing, plots and feel of the entire film.

I, for one, think this is the best film news of the year. I cannot WAIT to see the full film, as Lang intended it!

The good news is, the forthcoming release from Kino WILL include this footage, at least so says TheDigitalBits:

I'm the one who posted this news in the previous thread - but I completely agree that it deserves its own thread. I just have an odd aversion to starting new threads. There wasn't a lot of discussion going on in the former one - so perhaps this will draw more attention to the extremely exciting news. (And perhaps the few comments from the old thread can be merged into this one?)

Yeah, this is great, one of those "lost" treasures you figured was gone for good. All they need to do now is find Orson Welles' Magnificent Ambersons in a cave somewhere and I'm a happy man.

I'm not sure what kino's previous releases speed was, but I'm sure it will be the same as that one.

Hopefully MoC will eventually put out their own blu ray of this, with a new commentary track. I just hate supporting Kino.

Yay. According to the MoC rep at criterionforum.org, "We will be releasing METROPOLIS on Blu-ray as soon as Murnau-Stiftung have completed the HD telecine and it's been restored."

Re: Original Cut (Full length) version of Lang's METROPOLIS has been located!!!

From here:
Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” can finally be restored to its full glory. The final piece of the jigsaw, an original print of some of the previsouly missing scenes, has arrived in Wiesbaden, Germany from Buenos Aires where it was discovered.

“When you follow the whole story from August 2008 until today, we’re overjoyed to have it in our hands. There were a couple of occasions when we thought we were going get it, but we didn’t. So it’s great it’s here, and we can finally start the restoration work, “ says Helmut Possmann, Head of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation.

But restoration is a complicated proces.“The work consists of two parts. On the one hand, there’s the technical aspect: the digital restoration. And on the other, there’s the reconstruction. That’s what we’re doing here: reconstructing the original version,” explains Anke Wilkening.

The most expensive film of its time, “Metropolis” was originally released in 1927, but it was substantially cut after its premiere because the film was not as successful as producers wanted.

There have been several previous attempts to restore the film but all have had missing scenes.

The hope is to finish the restoration by January –
just in time for the next Berlin Film Festival in February 2010.

Re: Original Cut (Full length) version of Lang's METROPOLIS has been located!!!

This forum has quite the weird pathology about threads. That other thread is SIX YEARS OLD! A new thread for this news is absolutely warranted.

Fantastic news. Looking forward to seeing it on celluloid in a theatre.

I've never seen it in hopes that we'd get a FULL cut of the film sometime cuz footage was always popping up somewhere. Now...I have that chance. Wow.

If it's going to be that long, it better at least be rated R too.....
