It's a popular movie. That happens with all popular movies, especially more recent ones.
You think Beauty gets a lot of hate, take a look at Fight Club. You either got people who love it, or call it the worst movie ever made.

They're both very good films and there's not option showing they're both good. I'd vote for that option.

Neither suck, but I can't compare the two. Therefore I won't vote.
For future reference, some other polls I won't vote on:
Being John Malkovich vs Million Dollar Baby
Rushmore vs Rashomon
Thirteen vs Apollo 13
Boogie Nights vs When Harry Met Sally
Cat People vs The Man With One Red Shoe

I saw American Beauty 4 times in the theater with 4 totally different sets of people. All 4 sets did not like the movie at all. I found it to be brilliant and one of the best films of the 90's (Fight Club being #1).
Sunshine is a movie that requires a few viewings to "get". I have seen that one 3 times and it is another great film. However I saw this one by myself so no outside influence.
Comparing the two side by side is tough. Even though they follow a similar dramedy formula to a degree, I give the edge to American Beauty. I saw this because the support characters in American Beauty are for more interesting and but the actual plot is not as interesting as Sunshine. So Sunshine wins there.

i like them both, but after a 2nd viewing of Eternal fell in love with it and it has become eminently rewatchable. AB not so much, but still a great movie.

I meant to vote for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I clicked on The Both Suck instead. New glasses should be ready sometime later this week.
American Beauty I liked up to a point, but then it just lost me completely. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my all time favorites, always find something new to appreciate in it.
