Re: Smurfs - Live action

Looking at what they mention there, this won't have a medieval setting. And one of the major characters is an executive at a cosmetics company?

Re: Smurfs - Live action

I'm not surprised. Even Masters of the Universe messed up the setting and characters, and that was 1987.

John Lithgow for Gargamel. Goddammit, please get John Lithgow for Gargamel. Especially if he refers to the Smurfs as "c*nts" and frequently threatens to smash them with hammers.

Of course not. It's going to be yet another fish out of water story. Throw them in modern day society, preferably a big city, and hijinks ensue.

Maybe they'll have to stop a greedy developer who wants to put buildings where the village sits. That'll be a new storyline...

Are they going to introduce a rapping smurf to appeal to the "urban" audience?

I'm just trying to figure out how they'll shoehorn Shia Labouf into this (cos you know it's gonna happen).

Life action lead. Dammit, I was hoping he'd be Brainy.

Cast on Smurfs turf
Jonathan Winters, George Lopez set for Sony film
By TATIANA SIEGEL

Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry and Alan Cumming are seeing blue.

The foursome is in various stages of talks to lend their voices to Sony's live-action/animated "Smurfs" movie.

The 84-year-old Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Pop singer Perry is in talks to portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf.

Neil Patrick Harris has already signed on as the project's live-action character.

Raja Gosnell is directing the Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation hybrid pic from a screenplay by David N. Weiss & J. David Stem and Jay Sherick & David Ronn. Jordan Kerner is producing.

The Smurfs were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, better known as Peyo, and have spawned a number of print and smallscreen incarnations worldwide.

Sofia Vergara joins 'Smurfs' (exclusive)
By Jay A. Fernandez

“Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara is picking up her share of film work, too.

The Colombian bombshell has been cast in “The Smurfs,” the Raja Gosnell-directed adaptation of the ’80s cartoon series that Columbia Pictures will release in summer 2011. Vergara will portray Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is married to the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Jayma Mays and Hank Azaria also are cast in the movie, which begins shooting in New York in the next week.

This comes on the heels of Vergara’s nabbing a voice role in George Miller’s “Happy Feet 2 in 3D,” which Warner Bros. has dancing toward a November 2011 release. Miller is already filming in Sydney, with Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Azaria aboard to voice some of the animated characters.

Repped by WME and Latin World Entertainment, Vergara has appeared in the features “Madea Goes to Jail,” “Meet the Browns” and “Four Brothers.”

Re: Smurfs - Live action

Wow! Gargamel looks spot on!

Now if only they'd switch this to an exclusively medieval setting.

Re: Smurfs - Live action

So I guess they are going to have the animated Smurfs move from the medieval setting to modern New York...sounds like Rocky and Bullwinkle.
