There is another list making the rounds today, with TS at the top, and Iron Giant on it as well.

What a shock, the iMDB list if chock full of anime. Everything has their fanboys, but at least a case can be made for the iMDB top 30, whereas the Yahoo list is just scattershot and crappy. I'll take my madness with a method thank you very much.

My top ten, unsurprisingly dominated by the usual suspects Pixar and Miyazaki (hey, what do you expect from someone who posts on DVDTalk...). :

Spirited Away
The Incredibles
Ghost in the Shell 2
My Neighbor Totoro
Heavy Metal
Triplets of Belleville
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Castle of Cagliostro

For the record:

Whisper of the Heart is number 11.

I like The Iron Giant, but not more than any of these movies.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the best movies I've ever seen, but basically reduced me to a blubbering jelly for several days... so it can't be a "favorite".

I can fully appreciate the mastery of Disney Golden age stuff, but it's not for me.

At least the Yahoo list got Spirited Away right.

But no Iron Giant? Akira? Grave of the Fireflies? Triplets of Belleville?

Stupid Yahoo.

Any list of greatest animated films that fails to even mention Richard Williams' The Theif and the Cobbler is a waste of time. Animation is a very underappreciated art form, and these lists prove how little people know of it outside the typical Disney and Anime framework. As an animator (hardcore hobbyist, not professional) myself, it's kind of frustrating because I know people are missing out on a lot of fantastic work. Don't get me wrong, most of Pixar's movies are wonderful, and I like Miyazaki as much as the next person, I just wish people would branch out a bit!

Anyone who's interested in animation can do a quick google search of the aforementioned title and watch it on Google video. It's the masterwork of one of the world's more important animators and the culmination of his life's work.

My List in no particular order:

Iron Giant
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Perfect Blue
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Toy Story 2
The Incredibles
Grave of the Fireflies
Lady and the Tramp

I'm obviously weighted a little towards the Japanese side of things

Considering how Williams' film was completely screwed, was in development for something like 30 years, and then was dumped in theaters in an aborted form, it's not really that surprising. I haven't seen the film, but I've heard it's quite impressive.

Judging by the part of Yahoo's site that has that list, it looks like it's a promotional thing for Kung Fu Panda. The Yahoo users polled were probably given a specific list of family-friendly films to choose from.

I am the only one who thought the movie was visually amazing, but an absolute fucking mess otherwise? Alas.

Waking Life was infinitely superior.

I don't get the love for Akira, either. Influential, yes, but as a piece of storytelling it's an absolute failure. There are worlds of better anime out there. CASTLE IN THE SKY is 1000X better.

No Dumbo, No Fantasia, No sale...

That they include some serious animation is almost an insult, might as well go all out and put in Care Bears the movie and Barbie movies... one of the most creative animated films ever, Fantastic Planet, didn't make the cut... serious 2D animation will soon be so dead, hopefully then our favorites will eventually be recognized

Cinderella is the worst classic Disney feature yet it's rated the highest.

Incidentally, my brother swears by Yahoo user ratings when choosing what new movies to watch. He has the taste of a 12 year old girl. He has only scorn for the "elitist" RottenTomatoes.

Care to explain how you know what a 12 year old girl tastes like? Take a seat.

That list was made by people under 25.

Where's Akira? Where's anything by Ralph Bashaki? Where's Furngully? I don't think much of Dreamworks films will be on any list about animation come another 10+ years.

no "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer"?...

and 'Iron Giant' is one of the best things ever done... as Ebert said "you forget you are watching animation because the characters are so real"...

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

I don't have an opinion on the rest, but Iron Giant has to be in the top 30.

AOL's list is MUCH better IMHO. I still think Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Land Before Time definitely should have been on there, but there are probably those that disagree with me.

I don't claim to be an expert on Japanese Animation, in fact I haven't seen anything that I can recall, so my list will be completely void of those types of films. That being said, here is my top thirty:

-101 Dalmatians
-Aladdin
-Alice in Wonderland
-All Dogs Go to Heaven
-The Brave Little Toaster
-A Charlie Brown Christmas
-Finding Nemo
-The Fox and the Hound
-The Incredibles
-The Iron Giant
-James and the Giant Peach
-The Jungle Book
-The Land Before Time
-The Lion King
-The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
-Monsters, Inc.
-Mulan
-The Nightmare Before Christmas
-Ratatouille
-Robin Hood
-A Scanner Darkly
-Shrek
-Shrek 2
-The Simpsons Movie
-South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
-Toy Story
-Toy Story 2
-Tron
-Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

You may notice that there are only twenty-nine movies on that list. I am saving room for Wall-E. While it may be a bit premature, I am certain that this will be the most visually stunning Pixar Film, and will be a landmark in animation.

I'd want to put The Secret of NIMH and An American Tail in my top 30.
