Re: Tim Burton developing "Dark Shadows"
I didn't hate it, but the biggest hindrance was tone. You simply cannot take broad comedy and fuse it with soap opera stylings like Burton attempted to do; pick one or the other, especially when the next scene of Barnabas gnawing on a neck is played seriously.
The macrame gag was great. Pfeiffer got the biggest laugh (she seemed to be the only one who knew what the hell she was doing) and it was because she performed the joke as if it wasn't a joke. That's what it needed more of, not sight gags played to Barry White.

Saw it last night. Terrible. Such a wasted opportunity.
It needed to be either:
A) a fish out of water story
B) a vampire story
C) a murder mystery
It tried to be all three and it failed at all three.

I must admit, I thought the trailers were misleading and quite frankly craptastic, BUT... on the whole I didn't think it was a total trainwreck. Sure there were problems: too many characters, the story slightly patchworked, one the characters revealed as a ..... whhAAAt?? I actually kind of enjoyed it, not Burton's best, by a long shot, but still, I was entertained. Didn't bother with IMAX, but the digital projection I saw was great and the surround sound at the end really kicked it!

This film was rather a chore to sit through, I almost left in the middle of it, hoping it would gain some traction and my interest, but it did not, and the conclusion was nothing that I haven't seen before in terms of spurned supernatural love. There just wasn't enough of a hook or storyline that elevated this to a film worthy of its budget. Definitely a miss for Depp and Burton, who are probably batting .500 at best for me now.
I give it 1.75 stars, or a grade of C-.

I just came back from seeing it and I loved it as well and as boss429 and others have said for what it is, a campy popcorn movie. I only wish I saw it at a drive in.

I tried to go see this in IMAX last night, but completely missed it due to inept theater employees.
Instead I used my MoviePass to score midnight tickets to Prometheus in IMAX 3D. So, there's that.

Just finished seeing this. Yeah the tone was a bit inconsistent. Plus the trailers made it seem like it was just a fish out of water story.

This movie was frustrating, you could see its potential, and there were hints it was going to take advantage of its strengths only to not. Just a bit of a dull flick. And yes there's a werewolf.

Also what was up with the subplot of the Dad, seemed kind of pointless. I get that it showed Barnabus wanted to clean up the family but a lot of things in that movie came out of nowhere.

Rented this through a streaming service on my PS3. A few chuckles, but this is mostly pretty bad. Characters aren't that likeable, and seems like quirkiness for its own sake. Depp and Burton need a break from one another.

The sets and cinema photography are beautiful and along with the great cast this movie fails to deliver.
The two things that stood out for me was that I didn't like Depp's makeup which looked so cheap and the pop music they use through out the movie. Like when they played SUPER FLY and Barry White.

I have enjoyed all of the Depp-Burton collaborations, but this one really did not work for me.
