Sydney Pollack, Film Director, Is Dead at 73

Sydney Pollack, a Hollywood mainstay as director, producer
and sometime actor whose star-laden movies like "The Way We
Were," "Tootsie" and "Out of Africa" were among the most
successful of the 1970s and '80s, died on Monday evening at
his home in Los Angeles. He was 73.

just saw him in Made of Honor..looked pretty healthy there..

GreenVulture 05-26-08 08:05 PM

Wow, that is shocking. He wasn't one of my favorite directors, but he was one of my favorite actors. He will be missed.

TomOpus 05-26-08 08:08 PM

One of the few directors I actually like as an actor.

:rip: Sydney

EdTheRipper 05-26-08 08:10 PM

Too bad. :(

PopcornTreeCt 05-26-08 08:16 PM

Wow. I remember seeing him in Michael Clayton and thought he looked pretty healthy. That sucks.

R.I.P.

DJariya 05-26-08 08:16 PM

Wow!! I am stunned. The story said he died of cancer, but I have to wonder if how bad it was for him to continue working up until last year. He looked fine in Michael Clayton.

mdc3000 05-26-08 08:18 PM

Damn, this is sad news. RIP Sydney.

movieking 05-26-08 08:22 PM

Just saw this on CNN. Really liked Pollack as an actor, as well as a director.

chris_sc77 05-26-08 08:23 PM

This is f*cking weak.... :thmbsdwn: :( :( :(
RIP.
2008 takes yet another great talent.

TheNightFlier 05-26-08 08:31 PM

Well that sucks. I always liked him as a director and actor. RIP.

Cancer.

Mr. Salty 05-26-08 08:47 PM

Stomach cancer, to be exact. He's been sick for a while. I remember reading last fall that he was terminally ill.

MoviePage 05-26-08 08:53 PM

Yes, this is expected news but very sad nonetheless. It's funny because I was thinking about him last night -- heard he was very ill a few months ago and hadn't heard anything since.

I liked him as a director and even more as an actor.

riotinmyskull 05-26-08 09:00 PM

rest in peace.

Geofferson 05-26-08 09:13 PM

Sad news...great director & actor. I recently watched The Yakuza.

Arpeggi 05-26-08 09:35 PM

RIP, Mr. Pollack. Sad news, indeed. Condolences to his family and fans.

B5Erik 05-26-08 09:45 PM

Damn, I hate to see anyone die that young (73 is definitely too young to die).

I've only watched one of his movies, but what a movie! The Yakuza, with Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura. That really is a great movie!

The Antipodean 05-26-08 09:53 PM

I really liked him in "Eyes Wide Shut," even if that movie's generally panned.

I really enjoyed his performance in Eyes Wide Shut. And I think the movie is a masterpiece. :)

tofferman 05-26-08 10:03 PM

I probably appreciated him more for his acting roles than his directing. He'll surely be missed. :rip: Sidney
