Probably awesome. I'd only be remotely interested in this remake if they let Frank Miller write it and shoot it. I think a totally stylized Robocop film could be kinda cool.

But nothing - NOTHING - will top the original.

From Wiki:

In 1988, after the success of The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller was contacted by producer Jon Davison about writing a sequel to the Davison-produced box-office smash RoboCop, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Miller enthusiastically accepted the offer, eager to make an impression in Hollywood the way he had in comics the past decade. Miller’s screenplay was regarded as an ample follow-up to the original; filled with dark humor, socio-political commentary, and graphic violence.

However, the realities of the Hollywood studio system soon became apparent to Miller. Although he enjoyed being handsomely paid for his contributions, he lamented the fact that he was bombarded by notes from studio execs telling him that his script was “unfilmable.” His script was drastically re-written into what became RoboCop 2.

Synopsis

Frank Miller’s long-unseen follow-up to the 1987 blockbuster film finally sees the light of day. The machine that was born as Alex Murphy continues his war against the criminals of Old Detroit. But his human soul still haunts him with a sympathetic conscience and memories of his past life.

When his creators and benefactors at the Omni Consumer Products (OCP) corporation get wind of this, they deem RoboCop obsolete. Now our hero and his resilient partner, Officer Anne Lewis, are pitted not only against the scum of the streets, but the new OCP model that shows no mercy.

------------------

Above is the 9 issue comic adaption of the original script. I picked up the trade a while back, and it was a wild read.

Sequel is a better idea, but they need to get the time line straight. Robocop was set slightly in the future. It cant be 20 years later and 'present day'

Still, the future of those films wasn't Blade Runner-like, it was essentially the present day with technological advances and social and political unrest.

Well, I'm more open to the idea of a sequel than a remake. This makes me feel a little more at ease. Give it a subtitle and it's good as gold... assuming Aronofsky is on board. After Robocop 3 there's only room for improvement.

Aronofsky eh? The encouraging trend in recent years of attaching quality directors to genre popcorn flicks continues. Should be interesting.

Source: MGM
July 24, 2008

"Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its "RoboCop" franchise. Aronofsky, the director of The Fountain, and Self, the writer of Road to Perdition, make a formidable creative team, fast tracking the RoboCop motion picture and spotlighting it as one of the most anticipated new films for 2010.

The announcement was made today by Mary Parent, Chairman, Worldwide Motion Picture Group, MGM.

In making the announcement Parent said: "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce "RoboCop." Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.

Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."

The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The film's storyline focused on the future of law enforcement as a terminally wounded cop returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound."

Very cool news. The talent they have so far is great and just what this film needs.

If she continues her recent trend, I expect her to be in a tub at some point in the movie.

I wonder if this movie is going to be R, or given the PG-13 treatment.

It sucks Peter Weller pretty much disowned the role.

I wonder if they'll call this RoboCop 4?

Anything to get the bad taste of RC3 out of my mouth. Yuck.

Wasn't that the movie that bankrupt Orion?

I don't think so. Robocop 3 come out in '93 and it seems like Orion was in trouble before that. I'm sure it didn't help them very much.

"RoboCop will be likely gunning for a hard R rating."
