Director Anthony Minghella, RIP

LONDON - Anthony Minghella, who won an Oscar for "The English Patient" and directed such hit movies as "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Cold Mountain" and "Truly Madly Deeply," has died. He was 54.

Minghella's death was confirmed Tuesday by his agent, Judy Daish. No other details were not immediately available.

"The English Patient," the 1996 World War II movie that won nine Academy Awards, was one of a series of literary adaptations directed by Minghella. Others included "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) and "Cold Mountain" (2003).

Minghella was recently in Botswana filming an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's novel "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency."

In addition to his best-director Oscar for "The English Patient," Minghella was nominated for best screenplay for that film, and for his screenplay for "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

Among his other acclaimed films were "Truly, Madly, Deeply" (1990), and last year's Oscar-nominated "Michael Clayton," on which he was executive producer.

"The English Patient," based on the acclaimed novel by Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje, tells of a burn victim's tortured recollections of his misdeeds in time of war.

It won nine Oscars in all, including best picture, best supporting actress for Juliette Binoche, and a raft of technical Oscars including best film editing, best costume design and cinematography.

Minghella also turned his talents to the opera stage. In 2006, he directed an acclaimed staging of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" at New York's Metropolitan opera.

This is unexpected and sucks to a large extent. RIP.
He was a great director and was hoping to see many more films from him.
Also his DVD's were always extremely impressive and contained so many great bonus features that were entertaining and informative.
I am going to miss him and his films and DVD's.

This year really sucks so far in terms of celebrities who are dying vs. celebs who are still alive.

It's a shame. I still remember how he came out of bloody nowhere with The English Patient, making sure that the Weinsteins would try to shove out a very big, very grand oscar-baiter every year since. It's a beautiful film.

I'll have to throw Truly Madly Deeply on tonight for old time's sake. Rest in peace Tony. You didn't leave a lot but what you did leave is remarkable. Tons of this decade's crop of directors, from Joe Wright to Tony Gilroy to even McG, owe so much to you.

Wow, I'm just shocked. WHAT happened!?? Was he ill? Huge fan of his work. "Cold Mountain" is my favorite. But I've seen and enjoyed all of his films. Including last year's grossly underrated "Breaking and Entering". Such a shame.

Sad news. I really enjoyed his work, and I still have no idea what happened. This seems pretty sudden, and no mention of why he died. RIP.

Ripley was one of the most under-rated films of the past decade; I really love it. And I think he was robbed by not getting the screenplay Oscar for English Patient (Billy Bob Thorton adapting his own short film, is that really of the same difficulty?). Anyway, he will be missed.

I'm stunned. Anthony Minghella RIP. The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favourite movies of all time and his commentary track on the DVD is like going to a great film school and having a master do the lecture.

From Variety;

A spokesman said he suffered a brain hemorrhage at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck.

Even though I was never a big fan of his films, aside from Talented Mr. Ripley, it's sad to see someone obviously so talented go at a young age.

Sad loss, far too young, a very talented artist who should have had decades of good work still ahead of him.

The English Patient is often unfairly maligned for some reason -- Best Picture backlash, I suppose, and the fact that it doesn't spell everything out, forcing the audience to think and make some connections on their own -- but it's a really beautiful, deep film with a lot of moodiness and texture. I love it.

And The Talented Mr. Ripley is a near-masterpiece.

More info:

LONDON (Reuters) - British film director Anthony Minghella, who won an Oscar for "The English Patient," died in a London hospital on Tuesday after a short illness, his agent said. He was 54.

Minghella died from complications following surgery last week for cancer of the tonsils and neck, agent Leslee Dart said.

"The surgery had gone well and they were very optimistic," she said. "But he developed a hemorrhage last night and they were not able to stop it."

The son of an ice-cream maker, Minghella was married to Carolyn Choa and had two grown-up children, Max and Hannah.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was a close friend of the director, said he was "deeply saddened."

"He was one of Britain's greatest creative talents, one of our finest screen writers and directors, a great champion of the British film industry and an expert on literature and opera," Brown said. "He will be deeply missed."

Hailed as a master film maker and admired by actors as well as fellow directors, Minghella began his cinematographic career as a television soap opera script editor in the 1980s.

Gradually working his way up the television hierarchy, Minghella turned his hand to writing, winning in 1984 the London Theatre Critics award for most promising playwright for "A Little Like Drowning."

Other awards followed and in 1991 he made his breakthrough with "Truly, Madly Deeply," a film he wrote and directed for the BBC which crossed over into cinema and won a BAFTA for best screenplay.

"He was a great guy, a very, very nice man, a brilliant writer, excellent director," film producer David Puttnam told BBC television, adding his death was a "shattering blow."

Minghella won the Academy Award for best director in 1996 for the wartime romance "The English Patient" starring Ralph Fiennes.

He was also nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for the thriller "The Talented Mr Ripley." He wrote the screenplay for "Cold Mountain."

"Anthony was a realistic romanticist," said friend and colleague Sydney Pollack.

"A kind of poet, disciplined by reality, an academic by training, a musician by nature, a compulsive reader by habit, and to most observers, a sunny soul who exuded a gentleness that should never have been mistaken for lack of tenacity and resolve."

"The English Patient," based on author Michael Ondaatje's novel, was an unexpected global hit.

In an interview with Reuters after its release, Minghella said he had struggled to raise the money to make the film, which won 12 Oscar nominations.

"It was a very hard job to get someone to give us the money for this," he said. "It was a very unpromising document: a European film about a man haunted from his war-time past, good actors but no stars and a director who had little experience.

"It was understandable that people (in Hollywood) had no faith in the film. But they were all completely wrong."

Born to Italian parents and brought up on the Isle of Wight, he studied drama at the University of Hull in northeast England.

In 2003, he was appointed the head of the British Film Institute, the body created to make film more accessible to the public. Two years later, he staged his first opera in London.

The director and writer had been filming an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's novel, "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency." It was due to be shown on the BBC on Easter Sunday and on the HBO network in the United States.

He recently played the interviewer at the end of Atonement.

Sad case.
