well it's a trailer, whole movies that suck are designed around good looking trailers...

but that is pretty damn effective...

i kinda want to see it...

but i hate nothing more than a cool idea in a trailer made into rubbish by a film...

Yeah, I remember the great trailer for that one movie, I think it was called No City For Old People, something like that. but the movie sucked.

Well of course, theres some movies with amazing trailers that turn out decently enough (300) and others that look amazing and turn out amazing (No Country for Old Men) ;)

Brack 03-17-08 07:22 PM

I give points for good trailers. There's too many that are exactly the same. sure, this movie's trailer does some of the same things as other thriller trailers do, with a bunch of quick cuts at the end of the trailer, which seems like the standard. why not the reverse, with a bunch of quick cuts, then a scene or something. I don't know, mix it up Hollywood, your trailers bore me. maybe I'm just jaded, I dunno.

Mr. Cinema 03-19-08 07:58 PM

Solid trailer. This one's added to my list of Summer films to see.

RichC2 03-22-08 09:29 PM

I decided to seek out Ils (Them) after reading some good comments on it.

I have to say, I was fairly disappointed in it and hope The Strangers has more to offer and doesn't go a similar route (Ils got boring once they left the house).

Second Trailer

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Lock the doors. Assume you're safe. The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known. Champagne. Rose petals. Candlelight. It was supposed to be a night of celebration for Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman). But after leaving a friend's wedding reception and returning to the house, everything had collapsed for the happy couple. Then came a 4 a.m. knock on the door and a haunting voice. Is Tamara here? Writer/director Bryan Bertino explores our most universal fears in The Strangers, a terrifying suspense thriller about a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. The confrontation forces Kristen and James to go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to survive.

Not sure whether or not this will be any good. Considering the bad string of "horror" movies that seem to be popping up lately this could just be following suite. But on the other hand it is rated R, and looks somewhat decent. I'll probably wait and see what some reviews say about it before I decide to check it out in theaters or not.

My bad. Before I made the topic, I typed in the search The Strangers May 30 and nothing came up. Go ahead and delete or merge this then I suppose.

Seantn 04-14-08 11:41 PM

The search on this site sucks, just so you know. Simplify the search next time. I just typed in the word Strangers and it gave me the old thread.

RichC2 04-15-08 12:05 AM

Search isn't so bad, you just have to do title only search and keep it to single words.

kurupt 04-16-08 09:19 AM

From the trailers and stills that I've seen, this looks very, very similar to Ils. Not only in the "couple alone being terrorized by a concealed group of killers" theme, but down to the trailers, both of which have basically the same hook. Ils says something along the lines of "we hear things in the night and assume it's our imagination...this time it's not," while The Strangers has text that says something like "we always tell ourselves there's nothing to fear...sometimes we're wrong."

Seantn 04-16-08 12:51 PM

Only difference is that in this movie
Spoiler:
these killers don't appear to be young kids. They may be young, I don't know how old they are, but physically they appear to be fully grown.

RichC2 05-24-08 11:34 PM

That Ils trailer (the US trailer) was fashioned after the trailer for The Strangers.

Reviews have started rolling in:

As with last year's lean, mean B movie Vacancy, Bryan Bertino's The Strangers is a white-knuckle thriller in which a couple going through relationship difficulties is terrorized by psychos. -Slant Magazine (3 out of 4)

Hands down the scariest movie I have ever seen. I was a mess after it was over. - Chuck The Movieguy (YouTube Interview/Review with him, Liv Tyler, and Scott Speedman) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udytv14dE-s

So terrifying I watched the whole movie through a slit between two fingers. - Victoria Alexander filmsinreview.com

DeputyDave 05-24-08 11:40 PM

I wasn't so hot to see this movie, which is strange because it seems right down my alley, I've just been burned too many times before.

Now, I hate to say it but some excitement is building.

Rival11 05-24-08 11:44 PM

Really look forward to this one although I hope they don't over-do "the scary person standing in the distance with a white mask on who.......just stares back at you" thing.

I've heard good things about Ils but still have not seen it - did not know this was somewhat of a remake either - I will wait for the strangers first though.

RichC2 05-24-08 11:47 PM

Ils and The Strangers are unrelated, they just have some similarities.

And FWIW, I didn't like Ils.

I've been seeing a lot of back and forth on Ils - another reason why I'm holding off (but not the main reason, just not really all that interested in seeing it mainly).

asianxcore 05-25-08 01:33 AM

I'm excited about this film.

Going to try and catch it maybe this coming Saturday.

Supermallet 05-25-08 05:22 AM

I had heard this was sitting on the shelf for two years. Can anyone confirm/disprove that?

RichC2 05-25-08 09:36 AM

It filmed in October 2006, presumably with a Halloween 2007 date in mind but got pushed to Summer '08.

Draven 05-25-08 09:59 AM

According to Wikipedia , the "based on real events" comes from the Keddie Cabin Murders, which is a crime I hadn't heard about. Doesn't seem all that similar but I do want to see the flick, though I will probably wait for video.

It does look damn creepy though.

Mr. Cinema 05-25-08 12:34 PM

I hope it's better than the comparison made to Vacancy, which I thought was a piece of shit. The previews are very impressive. I doubt audiences are going to flock to see a R-rated horror movie during Summer, but at least it should arrive near Halloween on BD.

Wikipedia says it began filming on October 10, 2006 and finished in 2007. The release was postponed twice. They were eyeing for a Summer 2007 release, but due to "complications", it was pushed back to Autumn '07. And then finally this Friday.

The budget is only $10 million. I think it's safe to say this will be a money maker. The trailer has been playing alot lately.

I said previously that I didn't think people were hungry for a horror movie in the Summer. But the genre could use another spooky film again. Let's move away from all the shitty torture films.

The runtime is 107 minutes.

I agree on all 3 points!
