Tropic Thunder (Ben Stiller, Jack Black - oh yeah, & Robert Downey Jr. as...)

Saw a trailer for this many months ago, could have sworn it had a different title.
Looking forward to it, trailers are great.

Tropic Thunder really delivers. I should say that I am a huge fan of Zoolander and saw it theatrically a few times, so I'm predisposed to Stiller's brand of humour, but so far for my money, Tropic Thunder is the most satisfying movie of 2008 and certainly the best comedy.
Tropic Thunder is a politically incorrect, in your face, balls out action comedy. It's filled with hilarious razor sharp satire, cameos galore and of course, the performance everyone will be talking about, Robert Downey Jr. evoking memories of C. Thomas Howell, as an Australian actor who dyes his skin to play an African American role.
The movie opens brilliantly with a series of fake trailers that introduces us to the main characters and gets things rolling. Stiller is in fine form here as well, and even though Downey Jr. gets a lot of memorable lines, Stiller really goes for it as idiotic action star Tugg Speedman... Jack Black doesn't have much to do for the first half of the flick but eventually gets a few really funny moments and some filthy lines that people will be quoting in the future for sure. And the previously mentioned Tom Cruise (ok noir fan, i'll concede it's no longer a spoiler) is hilarious as the trash talking head of the studio. He has a few lines that blew the roof off the place.
In a summer that has given us one of the worst comedies ever in The Love Guru (I hope Mike Myers sees this and weeps), it's a relief that this one lives up to expectations. It moves at a quick pace, the ridiculous plot actually works really well and the movie is loaded with jokes that never feel too cheap.
We've still got some other great comedies yet to come this year (Step Brothers, Pineapple Express) but right now Tropic Thunder is at the top of my list. If you like war movies, action comedies and Stiller's brand of humour, you will not be disappointed. AWESOME. I just hope it doesn't take Stiller another 7 years to write/direct his next movie! 5/5 stars.

Without revealing too many spoilers, who would you say was your favorite character in the movie and why?
Also what other movies would you compare it to?

It is basically Zoolander meets Rambo with a bit of The Player mixed in... in other words, PURE AWESOME. If you like the trailer, you won't be disappointed... grab a can of Booty Sweat and see this one on opening day!

Damn, you guys beat me to posting those viral sites, they were pretty funny. I'm pretty sure they're gonna bring out trailers soon for those "movies", I can't wait.
It definitely has that Zoolander feel to the movie, Ben Stiller directing it and all. How good is Tom Cruise's role in the film? I've been hearing about how good it is, but its hard to imagine him in something so different! I am looking forward to it though.

Tom Cruise is really awesome in it, a lot of hilarious lines...and the trailers should be appearing online soon (probably after the film has opened, because the trailers are part of the movie). Seeing this one again on Monday at another screening - wicked!

Saw an advanced screening of this last night in Toronto. It was a great, very funny film that actually lived up to its trailers. Robert Downey Jr. hands down stole all his scenes and Stiller for once managed not to annoy me.
Spoiler:

All the reviews trickling in are agreeing that its gonna be one of the funniest movies of the summer. http://snobmoviereviews.blogspot.com...c-thunder.html
I was thinking... since this movie is a parody of Hollywood are there specific actors that they're targeting in this film? From the trailers and previews that I've seen, it seems pretty obvious that Jack Black's character parodies Eddie Murphy in his role of the Nutty Professor and a little bit of himself as the fat comedian. I'm not sure about the rest of the cast... was Robert Downey trying to be a bit like Heath Ledger? I was assuming that from a possible Satan's Alley to a Brokeback Mountain type of connection. And I don't know enough about Ben Stiller's character, other than it just looks like hes playing Ben Stiller.

Ben Stiller appears to be somewhat of a Tom Cruise, I think. The website made for Tugg Speedman is almost an exact duplicate of Tom Cruise's actual website that he launched a few months ago.

I also loved the conversation between Lazarus and Speedman where Lazarus tells him "You never go full retarded".
