The International (Tykwer, 2008) — Clive Owen, Naomi Watts in Interpol thriller

IMDB | Releases: August 15, 2008

Directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). Stars Naomi Watts as a Manhattan assistant DA and Clive Owen as an Interpol agent investigating a global banking institution. Also stars Armin Mueller-Stahl (the head of the family in Eastern Promises), presumably as the villain/antagonist.

Quasi-political thrillers are probably my all-time favorite genre, so this looks right up my alley. It seems a bit odd that the movie is being released in mid-August though.

They're shooting for that "Bounre was successful in this time frame" thing.

Tom Tykwer is without question of my my favorite directors at the moment. In addition to directing my #1 film of 2006 (Perfume: The Story of a murderer) he also directed my favorite segment in Paris Je T'aime and and other films I like quite a bit like Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior and Heaven. I can't wait for this.

I have a gut feeling I will like the movie, but that trailer was absolutely terrible.

Tykwer + Owen + Watts = sounds pretty awesome. But wow, that movie looks lame. The Tykwer/Owen/Watts fan in me says I have to see it though.

Since the comments suggest the trailer is lame, I'll avoid it, but I didn't know Tykwer had a film coming out and I'm intrigued.

I share your sentiments. It looks like the performances and visual style will be solid, but I'm left with a sour taste in my mouth after all the bland plotting shenanigans crammed into that trailer. But, as many have said, Tykwer, Owen, and Watts will make me scramble to see this opening night.

Owen? Watts?

My $10 is guaranteed. Meh trailer, but that shot of Owen swaggering towards that guy saying that he wasn't intending to arrest him was badass.

This appears to be the first of Tykwer's films that he didn't also write, and it doesn't look very good. Hopefully this is a one-off of sorts and not his first step into Hollywood blandness.

I'm stunned, did I watch the same trailer as the people who are calling it lame and terrible? Because I thought it looked great. And not just because I'm a huge fan of Tykwer.

International trailer used footage from Ghost Rider. Is this a common practice?

Does Tykwer use the same cinematoghrapher a lot? The shots in this look the same as "Heaven". I hope that comes to Blu-Ray soon. A great and beautifully shot film.

This one looks pretty solid, I'll definitely check it out. I usually enjoy Clive Owen too.

I've seen the trailer for this one more than any other film in recent memory. It looks decent, if just for a silly good time.

Re: The International (Tykwer, 2008) — Clive Owen, Naomi Watts in Interpol thriller

Variety review:
While prescient, or just lucky, to have made bankers its bad guys, "The International" is a mostly ho-hum globe-hopping thriller that gives the audience too little investment in its protagonists and central conflict. Graced with well-chosen location eye candy, Tom Tykwer's biggest production to date is proficient but lacks the added tension and characterization to put it anywhere near the top tier of contempo action suspensers.

Yep. The International is the 2009 version of Vantage Point.

^ That's about what I expected to read. I like Owen and Watts, but they aren't enough to get me to a theater if the films they're in don't look interesting. This looked like a simple, by-the-numbers political thriller and, apparently, that's what it is. Pass from me unless I read some glowing reviews here.

How did I not know that Tykwer was directing this one until now... I'll be there on Friday but the amount of times I've seen the ad/trailer is sickening - it really is Vantage Point all over again.

Luckily I've managed to evade it for the most part, in fact Burn After Reading is the only one off the top of my head that I saw the trailer for it before.

Nothing can touch the zenith of hell the trailer for Vantage Point put me through.
